Not only is he one of the best engineers that I've been lucky enough to work with, his musical knowledge makes him an essential part of the team. Writing and working with a full orchestra under tight time constraints can be a challenge, but having someone like him "at the helm" let's me breath a little easier! btw, he always makes me laugh!

Dan is best of class, first of class - come to think of it: he's in a class by himself. In more than 30 years of production as a composer and producer I've never encountered an individual in any creative discipline with the focus, intelligence, creative instincts and sound operational instincts as Dan. He will simply not let you fail.

Having worked in Nashville for more than 30 years as an arranger and producer, I have a large number of remarkable recording and mix engineers available. There is still only one guy I trust with my music…Dan Rudin.

I've worked with Dan for over 25 years on countless educational and theatrical recordings. Dan always strives for excellence, and never loses sight of the big picture even when attending to the smallest detail. He is professional and thoughtful in every aspect of his work. I'm always excited to hear the finished recording come to life!

I worked with Dan on an extremely tight deadline to mix an orchestral video game score. Due to some unforeseen hangups, I needed him to mix six tracks in about 1 1/2 weeks. Though he had other stuff going on, Dan adjusted and even found time to do revisions, nit-picky as they were. And while I was frustrated, he kept his cool, helping me stay calm!

I have worked with Dan Rudin for over 10 years now, and I can honestly say that I know of no other person with as deep a skill set as Dan. Is he an engineer? Yes. Mixer, guitarist, producer, arranger, detail person, tech head? Yep. All those too, but the real intangible is Dan's ability to make the whole process fun and relaxing!

Interview with Dan Rudin

  1. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  2. A: 30 plus years. I started at a studio in Boston at the age of 15, my first real job was staff at the Hit Factory NYC

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I just finished recording roughly 300 pieces of music for broadway shows. Now I'll be mixing those for a bit.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Really? You're asking this??

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: I will exceed your expectations. You've never worked with anyone like me.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: Free concert day. Every day.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: Q: "When can you do this?" A: "Just as soon as you need it."

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: That because I do so many things, I may not be right for what You do.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: What problems can I help you solve?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Choose someone whose opinion you value.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: Score paper, tunes, a pencil and piano

  21. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  22. A: I produced and engineered the licensing recording for Sweeney Todd. It is one of my favorite Broadway compositions and orchestrations and it was an honor to work on a sacred text like that.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: Very opinionated (laughs.) Detail oriented and committed to helping my clients achieve their goals.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: Gogol Bordello. They are visceral, honest and fun.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: If you're thinking, "we can fix that later," do one more take.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: all

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: understanding people

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: Regardless of genre, I always try to focus on the core musicality of the song and adapt the technology to that.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: Since no project is "typical," I don't think I can answer that one.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: I have three analog consoles, lots of outboard and an HDX rig with 40-48 I/O. Lots of tracking spaces as well, and we're adding an orchestra room this summer.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: I'm inspired by a great song, or just as often a great performance. The things that move me the most are the human voice and the sound of applause. (don't over-analyze that one :-)

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: As a mix engineer, I pull all the pieces together to deliver a polished, exciting, and emotional experience of your music
