Interview with Rory John
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: When approaching a mix I alway ask for a variety of example tracks for me to work from, the more specific the better! This helps me to conceptualise the mix so that I can align it to the clients taste. I then work from the ground up ensuring all blemishes in the audio have smoothed out (clicks, pop, phase issues) and then edit and tune instrumental and vocal parts before beginning to set levels. Every mix is different and requires different uses of plugins and approach.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: As much as I am a mix engineer, I'm an artist also and my studio reflects this. At the core is my iMac running Logic X, and a variety of plugins including Waves and Fabfilter plugins and Native instruments Komplete 11, Omnisphere and Serum soft synthesisers. My monitoring environment consists of Adam AX7's and my Avantone Mix cubes for A/B and stereo/mono referencing. These are the tools I will mainly use for all my mixing, producing and sound designing. However for writing I prefer to use real instruments and either record them directly or re-model in house if need be! I entered into the world of music as an instrumentalist so feel more at home with keys under my fingers or a guitar in my hands when developing song ideas or conceptualising over dubs. For this I fundamentally use my Fender Stratocaster 1983, my Nord Electro 6D or my Juno 60 (can get some really special sounds out of this one!). In regards to my outboard gear and microphones, I use either my Neumann TLM 103 or AKG C414 depending on the sound source and run the audio through my Avalon 737SP and SSL 611EQ.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: For me, I really admire strong song writers like Steve Wonder and Elton John. At the heart of any successful song has to be good song writing, people will listen to a well written song thats been poorly mixed but not the vice versa! More contemporary speaking, I'm a fan of an array of musicians and producers like Anderson Park, Kaytranada, Bon Iver and H.E.R to name a few!
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Vocal production and mixing and mastering are the services I'm requested to do the most, I have a unique background in regards to vocal producing and I believe this is where I excel the most. Having worked extensively with RnB and Soul vocalists.
