Colby Lapolla on SoundBetter

I believe that vocalists should operate like every other hired gun: fast, efficient, and effective. Your vision, my voice. Let's work!

Nashville-based artist and producer Colby Lapolla may be a fresh face, but she's no stranger to the industry. She has been a part of several big pop releases as a writer and vocal producer, in addition to coaching some of the top pop / r&b voices on the scene. Her sophomore single, "Hold the Line," recently spent a whopping two months featured on Spotify's Fresh Finds: Pop playlist --- after hearing her crystal clear vocals and unique, genre-bending instrumentals, it's no surprise.

When not working on her own music, Colby is an adept and accomplished studio singer, lending her voice to a variety of diverse projects, in addition to snagging writing and arrangement credits alongside vocal production. Her experience as an elite vocal coach trained under Brett Manning (Hayley Williams, Leona Lewis, Keith Urban), her degree in classical music, and her background as a vocalist for one of Nashville's best cover bands has made her an extremely flexible vocalist and a huge asset behind the mic.

As a producer, Colby is incredibly gifted both in the booth / on talkback, and in post. She is capable of creating detailed and dynamic demos top to bottom --- and also is a meticulous editor and mixer of vocals. Her precision and speed in Melodyne, ProTools, and Logic make trusting her with your vocals a breeze.

Colby is an amazing vocalist and vocal producer. I trust her wholeheartedly to make her vocals sound amazing, or edit/tune someone else’s vocals to pro status. She’s also an amazing artist and songwriter in her own right, which gives her a really helpful and knowledgeable perspective on any song or project. Can’t recommend her enough!

Colby has been teaching me voice lessons for a couple months. She KNOWS her stuff. She's super versatile and can kill any song. I highly recommend her working on your project!

Interview with Colby Lapolla

  1. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  2. A: My ear is 100% my strongest skill. I listen critically and learn extremely fast. I can be ready to do a pass at a track after 2-3 listens. As a producer, I can get my artists to the product we need in one take most of the time by immediately turning what I hear into an actionable step that's able to be implemented right away.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Currently, I'm co-producing five new tracks for my artist project and pitching them to major synch labels.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: I am incredibly consistent, an extremely hard worker, and I follow instructions well. When I'm behind the mic for anything other than my own artist project, I consider myself to be in the service industry.

  7. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  8. A: I think the biggest disservice done to vocalists in the studio is working with producers who only look at the voice in one way. Usually emotion is the in-road to vocal production in those settings. Whereas I find that getting specific and giving actionable fixes are the most efficient ways to make a vocal product truly great.

  9. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  10. A: I'm heavily involved in the Nashville pop scene as a coach, producer, and artist. I have worked with almost all types of artists, from musical theatre to r&b to psychedelic rock and outlaw country.

  11. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  12. A: I would be lying if I said Jack Antonoff wasn't on the list. I'm super inspired by badass female artist/producers like Chelsea Cutler and Bebe Rexha. As far as vocals go specifically, Kuk Harrell is the GOAT. Anybody who says otherwise is lying.

  13. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  14. A: I am best known as a vocal producer and BGV singer for clients. I many times am involved in the production of a track from day one, whether I'm officially credited on the song or not. I'm kind of a consultant to bring out the best possible vocal product, and lend my voice when needed.

  15. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  16. A: My client, Michael McQuaid, is your guy for all the male vocals you need!
