Interview with Miles Got Beats
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: The last placement on a project was "Million Dollar Listing". I'm proud whenever I get a sync placement, because I already did the work. When I reap the benefits over and over for something I did already there is no better feeling.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Beats for commercial placements as usual.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: N/A
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital, we're living in the future if you haven't figured that out yet.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise I won't quit on you, if you don't quit on me.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The balance of a variant repetitive process.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: "What are your rates", is usually answered by asking what your needs are.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That music production, mixing, mastering, editing, vocal tuning, songwriting, beat making, recording, consulting, and top lining is all one job.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: 1. What's the budget? 2. What's the goal? 3. What all do you need from me?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Understand your intentions, budget, and direction you want to go in before engaging. The deeper you understand how to proceed, the smoother the process.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Laptop, a small interface, condenser mic, Kaotic Eyeball+reflection shield, Headphones
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I originally started on the flute. I played several instruments after. Tenor saxophone ended up being my last principle instrument. I'm now a music producer that prides himself on knowledge of everything within the audio spectrum. I've been doing this 14+years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Urban
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Dj Khaled, because I really want to know his process a little more deeply.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Mix at low monitoring volumes.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Urban Hip Hop and RnB
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is being able to do anything in the music production process hands on. Jack of the entire process.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I can bring just a loop, or a full song production. It all depends on the needs of the project.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I at least create a beat and hook on the week days. most days are much more busy than this though. If I'm working with an artist I can at least get a song done in a 4hr block start to finish.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Right now I just use my laptop and a custom built mic I made in my undergraduate studies. I have a lot of gear in storage though.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Pharrell, Just Blaze, Dj Khaled, Kanye West, Dr.Dre
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The most common thing I do are beats. Some clients may want to take it a step further though and get a mix or master from me as well.
