Interview with CHYLD
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Originality and creativity. I like the process of the challenge!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: My strongest skills are in electronic production and hip-hop/trap beats, but it's a nice switch to work on some acoustic stuff!
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Less reverb.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: For my original music: Fun & funky with a touch of sad.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I typically produce music for a lot of rappers, and singer-songwriters.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I like to meet with a client first to discuss goals and ideas. If we're recording a demo, I typically can record a live session depending on the instrumentation, and if the client want's full production, I would include the demo recording, so we have an idea of where we want the song to go.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been doing this, originally for fun, since I was 16.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Laptop, midi keyboard, Korg MS-20, Roland Octapad, and (something I don't have but one-day want) Nord Stage 3.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Where do you see your self in 5 years with your music? What are your goals with your music? (Is this a career or just for fun? Do you want to tour with your music?).
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm currently working on my own EP. Some of these songs have been in the works for a year.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: This answer changes every day! I'm in love with everything that Flume does, and I'm a huge Tyler, The Creator fan. Some other musicians that inspire me are Bleachers, Haywyre, Billie Eilish, Greyson Chance, everything in the middle, and so many more!
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Nothing fancy really. I have a home studio in MA, mainly equipped around my Mac Book Pro and some analog synths.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Tyler, The Creator. He's such a hard worker, a creative mind, and makes sure everything he produces is put out exactly the way he envisions it.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I don't just press play.
