Jeffrey Anthony on SoundBetter

****I will be on tour from Oct 11 - Nov 10 with the Portland Cello project so I will be unable to do any session work during this period of time**** EDIT 10/7/2018 - I have uploaded 4 new songs, all recorded in my studio. I did the string arrangements, performed piano, drums, elec. bass, elec guitars, synths

I've spent over 22 years touring and recording with artists ranging from singer-songwriter, folk, rock, bluegrass, country, jazz, Americana, pop, and salsa bands. I've recorded on Grammy nominated records with Sheryl Crow, I'm a feature drummer on Sonoma Wire Works Drumcore, and my drumming has been heard in every corner of the world.

I am here to serve the song. I have a half dozen drum sets ranging from modern, to vintage, to big 70's concert tom's, to intimate early 60 Ludwig's. I have a huge selection of cymbals, and percussion toys, including custom made one of a kind items from Morfbeats

I setup and mic a unique drumset for each song, I do not have one drumset setup with the same mic's in the same position. I take great care to find not only the right part to play, but the right sonic template for each song. I am passionate about that. In fact I will use 2 or more completely different drum setup's for one song.

Want a tight drum sound for the verses, and a huge drum sound for the chorus? I can deliver that. I just completed a project for a client that had 3 unique drumsets playing all at one to create this amazing percussion part. I also have a beautiful stereo ribbon mic and can just set that up and play some brushes. Whatever you need I can make it happen, reach out and let's make some music together!

Couldn't help but engage Jeffrey again so soon after the last work he did for me. Great communicator, explains his processes and above all else, he provides such great quality drumming tracks that encapture the spirit of the project.

I was very impressed working with Jeffrey for the first time. Attentive, motivated and committed to realising my creative vision, Jeffrey was fastidious in our exchanges, addressing every detail and making time to effect further changes where necessary.

Experienced across a host of musical disciplines, I appreciated having a second set of ears across my project, most specifically involving drumming, percussion and time alignment.

First song with Jeffrey and a great experience at that too. Jeffrey's interpretation and subsequent drumming/percussion has lifted the song to another level. Clearly loves his craft and provided so much beyond what I expected. Quite an honor for me to be able to collaborate with such talented people as has been my experience with this site. Thanks Jeffrey.

What can I say?! You NEED to work with Jeffrey! He is an absolute pro and got my song completely. Not only did he go into detail about how he would play the percussion pre and post sending, but he also clarified each mix and room used for recording. I'm completely blown away by his work.

I'm incredibly thankful I came across Jeffrey on here. I had a acoustic guitar and vocal mix and gave him only few notes and he was able to arrange and record a performance that just blew my mind. Elevated my song to a level I didn't think was possible. Amazingly talented drummer. Excellent communication. Easy to work with. Prompt responses and delivery. Top notch recording quality. Looking forward to doing more tracks with him. Jeffrey is the man!

I had a great experience working with Jeff. After recording at home in non-ideal circumstances, I wasn't sure if adding drums later would work at all, but Jeff was able to come up with the perfect parts for my songs. He was able to capture exactly what I was hoping for with professional recordings that still somehow fit the vibe of my home recording set up. He made the tracks come alive in a really exciting way. Jeff plays to the song above all else so would be a great fit for many different types of projects. I can't wait to work with him again in the future.

Interview with Jeffrey Anthony

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: I am arranging 4 of my songs for string quartet for my 1st solo EP, networking in my new city of Tucson AZ meeting musicians, and future session players to work with, preparing for a 5 week national tour with The Portland Cello Project, and currently have 3 projects I am doing remote drum tracks on as I write this.

  3. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  4. A: Joe Henry I believe Joe Henry is producing some of best sounding records being made currently. Not to mention the song-craft of his own songs is truly incredible.

  5. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  6. A: play quiet with accuracy and intensity

  7. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  8. A: Singer-songwriter, folk, rock, pop, R&B, jazz, some fusion, blues shuffles, inde rock, experimental rock

  9. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  10. A: Listening

  11. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  12. A: Here is what I don't bring, an ego. I live for the art of crafting a drum part for a song.

  13. Q: What's your typical work process?

  14. A: I like to get the tracks, import them into my DAW, get levels set, then I make a chart of the song. If the client has sent any notes about which songs, or drummers, or specific drum parts they want emulated I then listen to all of those, and take notes. Then I choose the appropriate drums for the specific track. I will mix and match drum sets if necessary, and then I place the mics, get levels and record a few passes. I don't always use the same mics, and same pre's for each track, I try and get an appropriate sound for each track. I'll send over the raw files to the client and if any revisions are requested I make those.

  15. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  16. A: I am typically hired to come into the studio and provide musical drum tracks in a wide variety of styles to a click. I usually make my own charts with the provided demos, or in the studio the day of tracking. I can quickly change the approach, feel, type of fills, on the spot, making the client happy with the final result.

  17. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  18. A: I have a professional remote drum tracking facility called Harbor Lighthouse Studios that I just launched. I currently offer 8 channels of high quality audio tracks through a combination of preamps such as classic API, the amazing UnderToneAudio MPDI-4, Chandler Limited TG2, and I have a rotating selection of pre's that come through my API lunch Box such as NEVE's, CAPI's, SSL

  19. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  20. A: My favorite producer right now is Joe Henry. The sonic characteristics of the record he produces are just jaw dropping. When it comes to influential drummers currently they are Matt Chamberlain, Jay Bellerose, Jim Keltner, & Stephen Hodges.
