Interview with Jess Des
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill would be creating depth and clarity in the artists work.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I think I bring a passion and commitment to create the best possible product despite the genre or artist. I try my hardest to understand the artists intentions before working and then treat the music in a way that compliments the artistic idea behind the music. From a technical standpoint, I am always open to new ideas and techniques and constantly seek out new information to incorporate into my workflow.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Before any type of work I spend time listening and trying to understand the music. From there I decide on the approach I will take. I am lucky enough to have learnt a wide range of techniques, giving me options when it comes to processing audio. In the case of mixing, I spend time editing and preparing the mix and then proceed to mix for 3+ hours, taking a break to reference the sounds and then complete the work.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My personal work environment centres around a digital 'in the box' setup. I run Pro Tools and Ableton on my computer and utilise high quality plugins, outboard gear and a great AD/DA. I use two pairs of monitors in addition to HD650s to reference my work and maintain sonic consistency.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Musicians/ producers that are very involved with all aspects of music creation inspire me. All aspects including everything from song creation to mixing/ mastering. There is no need for a songwriter to have a profound knowledge about something like mastering for example, but it shows commitment when an artist is involved in each stage. Music professionals that are confident enough to try new techniques or things they have never done before inspire me too. All music is unique and should be treated that way by the people involved.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The most common work I do for clients is mixing. Within that I use my production knowledge to help prepare the tracks prior to mixing to provide the best possible result.
