Interview with JR Long II

What do you like most about your job?
I get paid to do something I love to do.
What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
Be specific as you can about what you want and if possible, leave a little creative wiggle room. Keep the lines of communication open. and don't be afraid of making suggestions.
If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
This actually happened to me lol. Maschine Studio, AKG Precision 200, Fantom G6, Forte audio interface and my laptop.
Which artist would you like to work with and why?
Keke Wyatt. Her voice really inspires me. The first time I heard her sing, I had a gazillion song ideas lol.
What type of music do you usually work on?
R&B and Golden Era Hip-Hop mostly. I have been getting more string arrangement work recently as well.
What's your strongest skill?
Being able to take a client's vision and turn it into a great sounding song. To be more specific, I'd say song creation.
What do you bring to a song?
My ears, passion, adaptability, and not taking criticism personally.
What's your typical work process?
I take directions from the client and start to build the song. When the song starts to take shape, I'll send the client an mp3 example. If they're happy with the direction of the song, I'll continue which is normally the case. But if they want to make any changes, I change it to their liking. I like to communicate with the client throughout the project to make sure they get exactly what they want.
Tell us about your studio setup.
It's small, but professional. I monitor with KRK VXT4 and use Sennheiser HD 25 II to mix the lower frequencies. The Fantom G6 and Yamaha Motif ES are used mostly for layering with my software synths. Besides Komplete 9 Ultimate, Omnisphere, Melodyne 4 Studio, iZotope Alloy 2, Ozone 6, and Nectar Elements, I use a lot of free plugins. There are quite a few great ones out there now.
What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
Lots! Prince, Teddy Riley, Jam & Lewis, Donny Hathaway, Prince, Clare Fischer, Leonard Bernstein, D'Angelo, Just Blaze, 9th Wonder, Boi Wonder, Young Guru, Robert Glasper, Art Of Noise, George Duke, Lonnie Liston Smith, Brian Michael Cox etc....
Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
Most of the time my clients want a completely produced song for either an album or as background music for videos promoting their product. As a pianist, my clients are all 5-star hotels and all I have to do is play and sing.
