Remote Metal Mixing

Ryan Howes on SoundBetter

Editing, mixing, and mastering. Passionate about all things heavy and extreme, my goal is to accomplish your artistic vision and aesthetic without compromising quality.

In a Metal or Rock band and need mixing and or mastering done? Shoot me a message!

I understand how much music matters to those who wrote it, I've been in the situation of cowboy mixers taking advantage of me and understand how important it is that your vision is realised in the greatest way it can be.

I am offering remote mixing and mastering services.
I specialise in extreme metal and I know the importance of aesthetic, not all music should sound super polished or sterile, some genres need that rough edge.

I have been playing in metal bands for 13 years at this point and recording myself and others for almost as long.

Hire me and I will bring your neck-snapping riffs to life.

Would love to hear from you. Click the contact button above to get in touch.

Interview with Ryan Howes

  1. Q: What's your typical work process?

  2. A: The first thing we need to do is establish a common understanding, not everyone's heavy is the same, language can mean different things to different people. Tell me what you want specifically, show me some references with music so I can learn about you. Next is usually tracking or on here, editing and mixing.

  3. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  4. A: Cubase 12 is the brain of my studio. Due to time constraints that many bands face because of budgeting drums at my space are done through a converted acoustic drum kit to allow for a realistic feeling while tracking and provide a high degree of flexibility after tracking. Guitars are mostly captured through a kemper profiling amp, anything captured through a musicians set up will likely be profiled with said kemper as a fail-safe should tubes break or alterations to the guitar tone need to be made after tracking.

  5. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  6. A: Erik Rutan and Kristian Kohlmannslehner are both major inspirations to me. Eriks "Drill Seargent" approach when tracking is such a huge part of what seems to be missing amongst a great deal of musicians and even some engineers, everything should be right at the source and editing should only ever be a last resort. Kristans commitment to aesthetics in production and willingness to experiment with new ideas is something that I feel has been missing from modern metal productions for some time.

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: I have been playing in bands for 13 years, half of my life at this point; I have been actively recording and mixing as a hobbyist for 7 years and professionally for the last 3 years

  9. Q: How would you describe your style?

  10. A: Aesthetics should always be at the forefront. A great deal of modern metal is produced to the point of sounding sterile. Some of these genres are supposed to sound ugly or edgy, not to the point of detriment but the non-linearity and lack of conformity within these genres are what attracted people to them in the first place.

  11. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  12. A: I would love to have the opportunity to work with Cannibal Corpse or Suffocation. The level of musicianship from these bands is astounding even if it isn't recognised by the mainstream. These are people who have pioneered modern extreme music, Suffocation being responsible for entire genres.

  13. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  14. A: Get it right at the source

  15. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  16. A: Typically I work with Extreme Metal bands, anything that is supposed to sound dangerous is attractive to me
