Interview with PaulOfCreation Remote Producer

  1. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  2. A: My home recording studio is a versatile, acoustically treated space designed to inspire creativity and deliver professional results. Equipped with high-quality studio monitors, a reliable audio interface, and a variety of microphones and instruments, it’s capable of recording multiple instruments simultaneously. I also have a selection of keyboards, a bass guitar, a ukulele with an amplifier, and a saxophone to bring versatility to any project. Artists often describe the space as warm, welcoming, and highly conducive to creating their best work.

  3. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  4. A: One project I’m especially proud of was performing at the Expo ’98 after-show party in Lisbon. I was hired to front the stage alongside two musicians and a DJ, leading a crowd of 6,000 people in an unforgettable live performance that was broadcast on national Portuguese TV. Smoke effects and a massive jumbotron amplified the experience, making it both visually and sonically memorable. My role involved live saxophone improvisation and collaboration with the DJ to create a dynamic, high-energy atmosphere. This experience was life-changing and solidified my passion for music and live performance.

  5. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  6. A: At the moment, I’m collaborating with a mix of local and remote artists across genres like electronic, alt-rock, and pop. I’m also revisiting some of my older projects to remix and remaster them using the latest techniques and tools. Beyond that, I’m exploring new creative directions, including drum and bass tracks with vocalists and cinematic compositions for a space-themed concept I’m developing.

  7. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  8. A: While I focus on delivering a full range of production, mixing, and mastering services myself, I’d be happy to connect clients with other trusted professionals if their project requires specialized expertise beyond my scope. Building a strong network of creatives is essential for bringing every project to its fullest potential.

  9. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  10. A: Both analog and digital have their strengths, and I believe the best results come from using them together. Analog brings a warmth, depth, and character that’s hard to replicate, while digital offers precision, flexibility, and endless creative possibilities. By combining the two, I can capture the best of both worlds, tailoring the workflow to the specific needs of each project.

  11. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  12. A: My promise to my clients is to treat their music with the same care and dedication as I would my own. I’m committed to delivering high-quality results that exceed their expectations while staying true to their artistic vision. Through clear communication, collaboration, and attention to detail, I ensure that every project reflects the client’s unique voice and resonates with their audience.

  13. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  14. A: What I love most about my job is the opportunity to collaborate with artists and help bring their creative visions to life. It’s incredibly rewarding to take an idea—whether it’s a rough demo or just a concept—and shape it into a polished piece of music that reflects the artist’s unique voice. Every project is different, and the process of solving creative challenges and experimenting with sound keeps my work exciting and fulfilling.

  15. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  16. A: Customers often ask, ‘How long will it take to finish my project?’ My answer is that it depends on the complexity of the track, but I always aim to deliver high-quality results within the agreed timeline, typically 10 days. Another common question is, ‘Can you help me achieve a specific sound or vibe?’ I reassure them that through clear communication and reference tracks, we can tailor the production to match their vision. Finally, clients frequently ask about revisions, and I let them know I offer up to three free revisions to ensure the final product meets their expectations.

  17. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  18. A: The biggest misconception about what I do is that producing or mixing a track is simply about pressing buttons or following a template. In reality, it’s a deeply creative and collaborative process that requires understanding the artist’s vision, shaping the sound, and balancing technical precision with artistic expression. Every project is unique, and it takes careful attention to detail and communication to ensure the final product reflects the artist’s intent and resonates with their audience.

  19. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  20. A: When working with prospective clients, I ask questions to understand their vision, goals, and creative preferences. I might ask about the story or emotion behind their music, any reference tracks or artists that inspire the sound they’re aiming for, and what the end goal of their project is, such as an album, demo, or single release. I also inquire about specific elements they want to prioritize, like vocals or instrumentation, to ensure every detail aligns with their vision. These conversations help create a strong foundation for collaboration and ensure the final result exceeds their expectations.

  21. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  22. A: If you’re looking to hire a provider like me, focus on finding someone who takes the time to understand your vision and supports your creativity. Look for a strong portfolio that reflects versatility and attention to detail. Communication is key—choose someone who listens to your goals, provides clear feedback, and collaborates to elevate your music. Most importantly, find a provider who is passionate about helping you achieve your artistic potential.

  23. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  24. A: If I were on a desert island, I’d bring my Mac with Logic Pro for seamless production, my AKG K712 headphones for incredible sound quality, a versatile Yamaha keyboard for melodies, and an Akai MPC-2000 to explore its legendary beat-making capabilities.

  25. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  26. A: My musical journey began at age 8, learning classical and jazz on wind instruments, which eventually led to performing as a saxophonist with school bands across Europe. After years of live performances and session work, I shifted my focus to music production in 2010. Since then, I’ve built a professional studio where I’ve collaborated with artists across genres like electronic, rock, and pop, blending technical expertise with creative vision to bring their ideas to life.

  27. Q: How would you describe your style?

  28. A: My style is energetic, precise, and deeply collaborative. I bring enthusiasm and creativity to every project, while maintaining a controlled and thoughtful approach to ensure the artist’s vision shines through. Collaboration is at the core of my work, as I believe the best results come from blending artistic passion with clear communication and attention to detail.

  29. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  30. A: I would love to work with Josh Homme. His innovative approach to blending genres and creating raw, authentic music would inspire me to push my creative boundaries. Collaborating with him would be an incredible opportunity to explore new production techniques and elevate my skills as a producer while contributing to his unique sound.

  31. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  32. A: One of my favorite production tips is to use high-pass and low-pass filters strategically. They’re incredibly effective for carving out space in a mix, controlling frequencies, and ensuring clarity. Whether cleaning up muddy low-end or taming harsh highs, these filters are essential tools for creating balance and focus in your tracks.

  33. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  34. A: I primarily work on electronic, rock, and pop music, blending elements from these genres to create dynamic and engaging tracks. Whether crafting high-energy beats, atmospheric soundscapes, or polished anthems, I tailor my approach to suit the unique needs of each artist and project.

  35. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  36. A: My strongest skill is connecting with artists on a deeper level to understand what truly drives their creativity. By fostering open communication, I can identify their goals and provide tailored suggestions that enhance their music. This collaborative approach ensures that every project reflects the artist’s authentic vision while benefiting from my technical expertise and fresh ideas.

  37. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  38. A: I bring a fresh perspective and a commitment to elevating a song beyond what the artist imagined. By blending technical expertise with creative intuition, I help refine their vision, adding depth, emotion, and cohesion to every track. My goal is to highlight the unique essence of the artist while ensuring their music resonates with authenticity and professional polish.

  39. Q: What's your typical work process?

  40. A: My typical work process begins with understanding the artist’s vision and passion for their music. I start by discussing their inspirations and the story they want their songs to tell. From there, I collaborate with them to shape their sound, whether that involves refining arrangements, enhancing melodies, or creating a polished mix. Communication is key throughout the process, ensuring that every decision reflects the artist’s goals and brings their creative ideas to life.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I’m inspired by an eclectic mix of musicians and producers who have redefined their genres. Mark Ronson’s versatility and ability to craft timeless hits, Paul Hartnoll’s pioneering work with Orbital in electronic music, and Liam Howlett’s innovative production with The Prodigy all resonate deeply with me. Quincy Jones’s legendary arrangements and storytelling, Miles Davis’s boundary-pushing creativity, and the rhythmic genius of Questlove and Q-Tip continue to influence my approach to music production. They remind me to stay innovative and authentic in every project I undertake.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I specialize in producing and collaborating with local and remote musicians across a variety of genres, including country, alt-rock, and pop-rock covers. My process starts with understanding the artist’s vision and emotional connection to their music. From there, I help shape their songs, ensuring that every element aligns with their artistic identity. Whether it’s refining lyrics, building arrangements, or crafting the perfect mix, my goal is to bring their passion to life while delivering studio-quality results.
