Interview with Marcus Porter
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Currently recording and performing with London based Soul/R&B artist Decosta Boyce. I've also just started working with acclaimed producer/musician Soulpersona, hoping to tour his new album in the summer.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The opportunity to play with great musicians and make music that I'm proud of.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I studied music at Chichester College from 2006, then moved to Brighton to study at BIMM in 2008. Since then I've been working as a freelance musician, working with as many different people along the way as possible!
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Groove based, raw, but smooth at the same time. I like to find the perfect balance between the rhythm section and complimenting the melody.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Someone like Cory Henry, because of the pure funk he creates with his band!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I like to keep things varied, but my passion is for soul and funk music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My timing and feel, and ability to lock in with other musicians
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a small home studio setup, working with Logic X. I'm able to record remotely, and also use it for arrangements.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Live performances make up the bulk of my work. I also do studio sessions.
