Interview with Matthew Fordham - Producer
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Listen to your tracks in mono to see how they translate on other systems.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I work on many types of music; pop, acoustic and electronic.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Recording and mixing.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Creativity, musicianship and the ability to add magic to your music, be it through capturing the best performance to production and mixing techniques.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: It depends on the project, but I think having a vision and an idea of where a track is going is important. It’s also important not to get in the way of the creative process and let things happen in a natural manner. It doesn’t matter how you get the end result.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My setup consists of high quality monitoring and conversion, crucial for hearing the performance and any nuances. I also use high quality preamps from Audient which capture a full sound without colouring the signal. When I want to add colour I use the outboard equipment and saturation plugins to warm and excite.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m currently enjoying Mac Demarco’s style of recording and production. I’ve also been listening to Shay Lia, who’s production I find really powerful alongside her strong vocals.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The most common work I do for clients is recording and mixing.
