Interview with James Moule

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: I'm currently working on helping with writing originals for a start up modern metal band.

  3. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  4. A: I usually ask for reference tracks, tabs, videos and details about the style and tone they’re looking for. This helps me make sure I deliver exactly what they need.

  5. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  6. A: Provide clear references and describe the sound you’re aiming for as specifically as possible. The more detail you can give, such as tabs or videos. Makes it easier to deliver something that fits your vision perfectly.

  7. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  8. A: -My 7 string electric guitar -A laptop with my recording and writing software -An audio interface -Headphones -A small MIDI controller

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: I’ve been playing guitar for several years and working as a guitar teacher while performing live and collaborating with bands. Alongside that, I’ve developed my recording setup and started offering session work, focusing on delivering guitar tracks remotely

  11. Q: How would you describe your style?

  12. A: I’d describe my style as tight, expressive, and adaptable. I focus on delivering parts that are both technically solid and musically engaging, whether that’s heavy rhythm playing or melodic leads.

  13. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  14. A: I’d love to work with artists who blend strong melodies with modern production, especially in rock or cinematic styles. I’m particularly interested in projects where guitar plays an important role in shaping the overall sound.

  15. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  16. A: If I'm recording a live guitar amp, I like to split the signal in two and keep a dry DI take. This would allow me to reamp the same performance later, without the need to re-record. This is a backup just in case the tone doesn't fit the overall music.

  17. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  18. A: I mainly work on rock and metal, but I’m comfortable adapting to other styles such as funk, pop and alternative. I also enjoy more melodic and cinematic styles when the project calls for it.

  19. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  20. A: My strongest skill is delivering tight, clean guitar performances with good timing and feel, while also being able to adapt to different styles and match the client’s vision.

  21. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  22. A: I focus on bringing energy, precision, and musicality to a track. Whether it’s tight rhythm playing or expressive lead parts, my goal is always to serve the song and enhance its overall impact.

  23. Q: What's your typical work process?

  24. A: I start by listening carefully to the track and any references provided, then plan out parts that fit the song. I record multiple takes to ensure tight timing and feel, and deliver clean, well-organised stems. I’m also happy to make revisions to make sure the client is fully satisfied.

  25. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  26. A: I work from a home recording setup that allows me to deliver clean, high-quality guitar recordings. I record directly through an audio interface mixer using amp simulations and plugins, which gives me flexibility to match different tones and styles depending on the project.

  27. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  28. A: I’m inspired by guitarists and producers who combine technical skill with strong musicality, such as Richie Blackmore and Brendon Small. I also enjoy modern composers and producers who blend cinematic and contemporary styles, especially in game and anime soundtracks.

  29. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  30. A: I mainly record electric guitar parts for clients, including rhythm guitars, lead lines, and solos. Most of my work involves taking a client’s track or reference and delivering tight, high-quality recordings that fit the style and elevate the overall sound.
