Interview with silverfilter

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Both.

  3. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  4. A: It's very dynamic. Music is a creative endeavour so it's always somewhat new.

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I have been working professionally as a music producer for 16 years. But I've been playing music for 23 years already.

  7. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  8. A: Don't forget to immerse yourself. If a client asks for a certain sound, be sure to listen to a ton of tracks under that genre/style to get a general feel of the do's and dont's of that style. There are distinguishing sounds per genre so be mindful of those once you immerse yourself and take note so that you can be able to identify what makes it different from the other styles.

  9. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  10. A: Having worked with hundreds of clients especially for TV, it's a mixed bag really since I can be asked to do a dubstep track today, and then a pop track tomorrow. Generally though, anything electronic I can do from house, techno, chillout, lounge, pop, EDM, etc. Then for band-based stuff, I can work on Rock, Hard Rock, Blues, Funk, Alternative Rock, and Pop.

  11. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  12. A: Most of the time, clients approach me to create music for their song, since I can create the whole "minus-one" part of their song. The benefit is I can cater to those who need an electronic-based sound as well as something that would sound like it was played by a full band since I can play all the instruments (Guitar, Bass, Drums, Keys).

  13. Q: What's your typical work process?

  14. A: - I usually get the whole brief from client to get the whole picture and ask as much to understand where they're coming from. - We usually also go over some similar types of sounds to know if we're on the same page. - After getting all the info I need, I immerse myself in the sounds/inspiration of the client. - I then work on the initial draft. - Once I'm done with my draft, I get it sent for approval - Once approved, I proceed to the final mix and master of the tune.

  15. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  16. A: I have 2 studios. One main where I do most of my productions for clients. I have a dedicated recording booth for both studios. I have a mix of hardware and software. Although I work more in the box for ease of use since I cater to corporate clients who need the quickest turn-around.

  17. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  18. A: I'm inspired by old and new school artists. Old school ways are tried and tested and have worked because it's been around for a long time. New school ways are opened up especially in recent years where technology has been playing a big part in the production process.

  19. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  20. A: I mostly produce TV/Radio/Online music for videos as well as music for individuals like songwriters who need music for their songs. I also do full albums for clients on specific sounds required.

  21. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  22. A: Since music deals with the creative side of the mind, sometimes it's hard to have a common understanding of what one may say to what the other understands. So usually, I ask for artists or songs similar to the sound they are after then we can begin an exchange of ideas to meet in the middle.
