Ben Heller is meticulous and won't stop turning knobs until he gets the sound he's hearing in his head. When I first heard Ben play live, I knew he was a musician who took his profession seriously and that is why my band chose him to record our latest EP. He gave us more than we ever expected and I can confidently recommend him to others.

If you can dream of a sound, Ben can reproduce it! This guy has an incredible skill set for replicating the subtle nuances in today's recordings. He brings attention to audio artifacts that I never even knew where in my record collection. One of the biggest complementing traits to Ben's ear is his love of audio gear! He is a nerd for sure!

Ben produced and mixed my bands most recent three song EP. Ben has an incredible ear for music. He is the real deal. I've never met someone so dedicated to a craft in my life. He has an amazing ability to take a song and make it into a hit. He's also just a blast to work with. He knows people and how they work and how to draw out the best in them.

I sing and play guitar in an indie pop band called Westport. Ben produced and engineered our self-titled EP, and the amount of hard work and skill he brought to our songs was unprecedented and really took our band to the next level. He was super friendly and easy to work with and we wouldn't have gotten the great product we did without him.

Interview with Benjamin Heller

  1. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  2. A: Juno 60, Jazz Bass, Neumann 67, 1073, 808 Drum Machine. I'm pretty sure I could make a killer album with that gear.

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: That you will LOVE the product after I'm done with it.

  5. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  6. A: So many people have said it but... Get it right at the source.

  7. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  8. A: I think the project I'm most proud of is October VI's first EP. October VI is my wife and I's band. The two of us recorded 80% of the instruments, produced everything ourselves, and I mixed the project so it's a pretty good indication of who we are and what we are about. And... It's badass.

  9. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  10. A: Analog for recording / Digital for mixing Analog gear brings a total vibe to any sound you put into it. I love when drums go through real pre-amps and EQ circuits of an analog desk. It adds loads of harmonics to the signal and just makes me happy. With the expectation that recalls should be a fast process mixing in the box is a no brainer. Also, if you mix up your plugin usage as much as you can I think it gives a more non-linear response which seems to be similar to mixing in the analog domain.
