Interview with Khadijah Rose

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: At the moment, I am working on a few different projects-- a few are only in the making and I haven't publically announced those yet, and a few are things that I am actually currently and steadily working on, such as: I am writing constantly and am working on a couple of piano projects. Also, I have been hired to work with a songwriter/novel writer who has turned his original poems in his book into songs. So far, I have completed four songs for him, but I am gearing up to go back in the studio and record another song for him. Also, my singing group and I just performed a six song set for an event and I was able to debut and sing an original song with background harmonies and the whole nine yards. Now, we are working to record and put out our group album to the public. I am keeping busy, but when you are doing something that you love, it's no longer consider work; it's just called having fun~!

  3. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  4. A: I am especially proud of the work that I did for a songwriting team in New York on a song called "No Time For Us" because it was my first real "song for hire" job and my clients were very satisfied. This particular song that I did was for a demo release so that the songwriting team could shop the song around for placements to artists like Keyshia Cole, Monica, etc. Another pivotal moment is when I wrote, sung, and played the piano for a Graduation back in 2008 and introduced my song called "Moving Forward". 2008 was many moons ago and the fact that people still come up to me singing lyrics from that song is so amazing and humbling to me. In fact, a couple of months ago, one singer even did her OWN cover to my song "Moving Forward", and that had me on Cloud Nine. It's a beautiful thing and the fact that someone else felt your song enough to cover it lets you know that your gift is something special.

  5. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  6. A: I've written songs in all different genres, from Pop to Neo-Soul to Country to Hip Hop. I don't box myself into one particular genre

  7. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  8. A: •Originality •Flavor •Power •Emotion •Energy I call the flavor that I bring to songs my "Khadijah-isms", which is my own personal style that I bring to any song that I am singing.

  9. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  10. A: •Vocals •Top Line & Background Vocals (for demo use or personal releases) • Vocal Arranging •Songwriting •Voice Overs •Jingles

  11. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  12. A: My promise to my clients is that I am here for you and your satisfaction is what matters to the me the most. I will work hard to fulfill your vision and make myself available to you. I will focus and put 1000% into each and every project that I am blessed to work on.

  13. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  14. A: I would love to work with Stevie Wonder because he's one of the best songwriters of our lifetime. My group and I recently sung at an event and one of the songs that we sung was "As". I hadn't really paid attention to the lyrics before, but when we were rehearsing for the event, I really got to study those lyrics in that song. Ever since then, I've been really paying attention to the lyrics in all of his songs. That man is so deep and he says things in his lyrics that no one else would think to say. So just to be able to work with him and be in the presence of a musical extraordinaire would be beyond amazing and fulfilling.

  15. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  16. A: My strongest skill is evoking emotion and feeling and bringing the lyrics to life. I don't begin to work on a song until after I've completely read and understood the lyrics, and then I find ways to relate to them so that when I begin to sing those lyrics, they will come from a true, honest, and believable place.

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: Initially, I have a conversation with my clients, rather through email, Skype, or on the phone- whichever way is most convenient and comfortable for them to really find out what their vision is. Whatever work that needs to be completed, I record the desired tracks and then send them back to you through mp3 format so that you can critique it to your liking.

  19. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  20. A: My father is a profession musician who owns his own small studio that I do all of my recording and production out of. I have worked with production teams and songwriting teams in New York and in California, and I was able to complete our creative collaboration from right in our respective locations, with no problems.

  21. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  22. A: Stevie Wonder (musical genius)/ Beyoncé/ Berry Gordy/ Smoky Robinson/ Erykah Badu/ Baby Face
