Interview with Black Market Recording

  1. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  2. A: My job is never boring because I never have to work on the same thing twice. Every day is a new set of challenges.

  3. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  4. A: I bought my first 16 track Yamaha digital recorder at the age of 12 after mowing my dads lawn for a year. After that I interned at a recording studio called Rockwell Sounds for four years in high school. I got my degree in Recording and Production from Berklee Boston in 2014, and my Masters from Berklee Valencia in Music Technology and Innovation in 2015. I have since enrolled in a coarse to become an Avid Certified Expert in Pro Tools with an anticipated finish date of 2016.

  5. Q: How would you describe your style?

  6. A: I think I bring out a little bit more aggression and grit to alot of recordings I work on. I like them to feel kind of old school.

  7. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  8. A: I work on alot of Americana, Rock, Jazz, Folk, Reggae, Garage, and Pop music.

  9. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  10. A: My strongest skill is being able to work fast, organized, and in a professional manner. If you really need a song finished as soon as possible, but want it to sound professional, I am your engineer.

  11. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  12. A: I have a Tascam 388 1/4'' tape machine that I use for tracking, and as a mastering tool. I have Pro Tools 11 and numerous plug ins (Melodyne, RX Suite, etc) that I use for editing, mixing, and mastering.

  13. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  14. A: I am very inspired by Jack White, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and many others. I want to be able to release a steady stream of high quality work over the course of my career as a music producer.

  15. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  16. A: Typically I will edit, mix, and master a track for a client to completion. This usually involves a dialogue every day where I will update the client with my progress, any changes I've made, and creative discussions about the track over email.

  17. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  18. A: I promise to provide you a high quality mix or master at a fraction of the price of many of my peers.
