Interview with Simon Saunders

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Sony Playstation album of tracks for game GT5. My role was to produce 10 tracks for the game play. Very proud as they heard my music and asked me to produce for them.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: A track that Laurent Garnier will be playing in London this friday.

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: Listening to the finished result on great speakers.

  7. Q: How would you describe your style?

  8. A: For me, its all about the details, get all the details right, EQ, balance, tuning, etc and then apply some great ears and technical experience. That is my style and my recipe for a great sounding track.

  9. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  10. A: Chemical Brothers. Those 2 are simply a genius in terms of originality and production. They are lucky enough to have a great team around them.

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: Biggest thing I find wrong with peoples mixes is that they don't EQ each sound. Major important tip.

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: Dance mostly as I am highly specialised in this area, but last week I worked on punk, EDM, & classical.

  15. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  16. A: Listening and fixing problems with a mix.

  17. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  18. A: A great set of ears that will pick up things you didn't even notice. The result should be sonic greatness & clarity.

  19. Q: What's your typical work process?

  20. A: Listen to what the client wants, get references. Give feedback on what we need to do to achieve client goals.

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: Event Audio, 1 cat, UAD, sound proofed room and Logic Pro X and my ears!

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: Chemical Brothers, Jacque Lu Cont, Mr Scruff

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: Production, Mixing & Mastering.

  27. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  28. A: Customers always ask what I think about their music. Im from North Yorkshire so I am very honest in a helpful way as my only goal is to get them a great sounding mix.

  29. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  30. A: That every single client must walk away with what they wanted and more and be happy.

  31. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  32. A: That its easy and quick.

  33. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  34. A: Recording techniques used for the song structure, what DAW they used. Who created the original mix

  35. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  36. A: Be very honest and upfront with what you want to achieve.

  37. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  38. A: Solar power, Mac desktop, satellite internet connection, my Event Audio speakers and a hammer (to build a sound proof room... with a view)

  39. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  40. A: 23 years in total from the start when I learned the art of splicing tape together at college. Now I feel old :)

  41. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  42. A: Dont know anyone yet.

  43. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  44. A: Both. Like salt and pepper. They work great together.
