Interview with The Boom

  1. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  2. A: Most common work i do is mixing and editing, sometimes adding new sounds in the song or even replace existing ones.

  3. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  4. A: 8 years. Started in Moscow in the small studio with SSL AWS9000 and somehow came in US and found Cleartrack Studio that was offering advanced engineering course, after i took a course - chef engineer Mike Jhonson called me up to join a team.

  5. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  6. A: Life and presence. Clarity and volume.

  7. Q: What's your typical work process?

  8. A: Listen to a raw bounce of the mix and getting some details and trying to shape it up

  9. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  10. A: Timbaland. Dr. Dre, Danjahandz.

  11. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  12. A: I think it was Consuelo Costin. Because it was complicated project to mix with 100 tracks in it and when i finally finished mixing and "mastering" client sent track to Ted Jensen to master the whole album - Consuelo liked my version of mastering better and Ted said some good words about that track too.

  13. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  14. A: Mixes.

  15. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  16. A: Analog. A lot of articles answer why.

  17. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  18. A: No promises - no disappointments

  19. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  20. A: Ability to be one on one with music.

  21. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  22. A: Where are you from? - Russia

  23. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  24. A: People think that they can come and lay down 10 tracks in 2 hours and get them mixed in another 1. Thanks to "engineers" that do 1 hour mix and call it mix which i think just a raw demo.

  25. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  26. A: I have my favourite SSL 8000 g+ conse, pultec eq's, universal audio compressors, good set of Neve 1073/1081 eq's/pre's. Api2500, Bricasti m7 and many other things.

  27. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  28. A: Combining things that can't be combined together

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: Pop/hip-hop

  31. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  32. A: Listen to the tracks.

  33. Q: How would you describe your style?

  34. A: My mixes will speak on my behalf.

  35. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  36. A: Format of a session? Do you use any proccesing on your tracks?

  37. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  38. A: UA 1176, Pultec EQp-1, Neve 33609, Neve 1073, SSL 8000 G+

  39. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  40. A: I can't. It's a top secret.

  41. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  42. A: I'd love to work with Timbaland because of the style of his beats and fat sound.
