Endorse .I've worked closely with Matt over the last several years, and each time the work has always exceeded expectations. His professionalism is only matched by his creativity and laid-back attitude. He'll always be the first person I call when I need a producer, an engineer, or even a quick production tip. I am looking forward to expanding our robust well of material.
I’ve seen Matt create amazing records for over a decade with all types of projects and all kinds of studio set ups. Bedroom, Studio Bisco (The Disco Biscuits), live recordings. I can say hands down that he’s my favorite engineer I’ve ever worked with. He’s also one of the best dudes you’ll ever meet. I would and have reccomended him to everyone I know.
Matt's a skilled engineer and producer. His experience says it all. Would recommend highly.
Matt's great and easy to work with. Has a very very solid handle on all these things and can help you find the sound you want even when you're not quite sure how to verbalize it.
He’s talented and very kind.
I had a great time with Matt in the studio and I really appreciated his great precise work.
I wish to work soon with him.Fantastic, easy to work with and had the production tools and instincts necessary to make us feel confident and comfortable in the studio. Will always work with/recommend Matty.
Have worked with Matt for years on numerous projects all over the country from basements and bedrooms to world class studios in NYC. Matt is one my favorite engineer's to work with to help find the sound and vision I’m searching for and then heighten those ideas.
We're talking about a solid dude here, with an incredible ear. Matt's the kind of guy you want in the room while recording..
ruly became a part of the family of the band. I wouldn’t have asked for someone else, and I hope we get to work with him again!
Matt's a great dude to hang with and incredibly talented guy to work on music with. He really helped our band channel and hone in on a specific sound, where we had previously been bouncing all over soundscapes, never landing on one defining sound.
Interview with .
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I have a laid back, but deliberate attitude towards making a record. From Track to Mix, you have to allow room for inspiration and spontaneity, yet have enough of a foundation that you don't get lost.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: An EP by Dan Luke and The Raid. It was an amazing time making that EP, wonderful memories. So much of those sessions were impromptu and experimental; very inspiring. I was Recording Engineer and Mixer. Produced by Brad Shultz.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Do you work on my genre/style of music? Ill tell you the truth if I've never worked with a particular type of music, however, that has never scared me from taking on a project. The way I see it; music and records are more about emotion and feel, rather than genre or style.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That mixing is a purely technical process.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Taking recorded material and Mixing a final and internationally competitive record.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Bettering Myself!
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Go with what feels right to you.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been at this all my life, I will never forget the first time I heard something played back to me that i had just performed; it was life-changing. I continued to experiment and build my skills until I met the band the Disco Biscuits - they gave me a place in their studio and allowed me to really grow and develop. I then moved to NYC, met Producer/Mixer Steve Greenwell and truly started to shape my professional abilities. My education has been entirely through mentors and experimentation. "The School of Hard Knocks" as they say!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Whichever works better for the situation. Both sides have their benefits and drawbacks.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Being able to create something out of nothing. Capturing the moment of inspiration.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Where were you coming from when you wrote and recorded this? Is there a definite emotion or thought you are trying to convey in this performance?
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I typically start by listening to the rough mix provided. I get a sense of what elements build the song and get a feel of the overall vibe. If possible I will have a conversation with the artist about their intentions with the sound and flow of the song. From there I let the song itself reveal where each element should be, and I take the Mix to the level I feel it needs to reach.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work with a hybrid of digital and analog equipment providing a wide palette of color and flavors to work with. Pro Tools is my DAW of choice. Lately Ive gone almost entirely mobile as I'm always on the move and working in different environments to match the project at hand. Evolve or die!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A boat, an engine, a tent, water purifier, cooler.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Mix by Matt Sim
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: You will love what we create and achieve together.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Let the song guide your actions. Let your heart guide your decisions.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Rock, Rap
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Musical Translation.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Experience, Insight, and Heart.
