Robert Gastelum, also known as Robbie G, plays soulful Jazz-styled trumpet. He started playing in about 1996. A quick study, he graduated from Berklee College in Boston from 2004 to 2007, with a bachelor’s degree professional studies. Right now, he’s living in the Napa Valley, composing and producing music; mixing instrumental Jazz with other types of music. He spends his free time playing trumpet and flugelhorn in various projects.

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: A Latin Jazz gig I did with some of the Bay Area's top Latin Jazz musicians; it was a gig at The Westin In Napa and an audio engineer friend recorded it.

  4. A: Just mostly playing gigs for a music non-profit in Napa, CA.

  8. A: Digital. It's fastest.

  16. A: People don't understand why I'm so passionate about the trumpet and making beats.

  22. A: Trumpet and melodica.

  24. A: I was always into music, for the past 22 years.

  26. A: An original Jazz trumpet sound.

  28. A: A top sax player, like Jessy J or Kirk Whalum.

  30. A: Just release the best sounds you can. Don't settle for less.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Jazz kind of music.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: The trumpet.

  36. A: A Jazz element, an original sound with the trumpet and original beats.

  38. A: Repetition, recording.. redo, listen back, edit, redo, tune up, redo, etc. etc. over and over until satisfactory.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I have a new MacBook Pro and a basic 1 mic interface and small studio monitors.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Any Jazz trumpeter, horn player music artist and interesting/original track/beat makers.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Play Jazz trumpet and make beats.
