Nigel Rome on SoundBetter

I'm interested in artists with stories to tell and I'm committed turning them into songs. I will produce, mix, master, and write for you.

I'm a hard working and quirky producer, engineer, and songwriter. I'm not looking for 'clients', I'm looking for people to make music with. I started writing songs at the age of 10 (and poetry slightly later) and eventually started to learn about production and I can work in Pro Tools, Ableton Live and FL Studio but I can still work with people using other DAWs as long as they send me the necessary audio files.

Your music means a lot to you and I'm here to help you turn it into something great.

Send a message, we can talk, ask as many questions as you want (seriously, as many as you want) and we can see if we're on the same page.

Send me a note through the contact button above.

I worked with Nigel on two projects - part of a beat for a track that I was writing, and he provided mixing and mastering for a piano and vocal track that I did. Nigel is an excellent communicator, especially considering that we were working remotely. I am very appreciative and happy with the quality of the work I received back!

Nigel was amazing to work with, he has a knack for creating vivid and unique lyrics. He was so professional and I'd love to work with him again.

Interview with Nigel Rome

  1. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  2. A: Every book I've read, every tutorial that I've watched and most importantly, that musical moment that I find inside myself and inside whoever I'm working with.

  3. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  4. A: Split the mid/side of your tracks and automate the volumes or just use a stereo imager. You are so so welcome.

  5. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  6. A: I'm flexible but alternative, pop, R&B, hip-hop, and soul mostly.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: I have more free revisions then anyone I've seen on this site, I want to give you everything that I have because I know that your music is the world to you and I can relate.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: Music all day! I'm not good at other of things.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: Them: Can you make this sound? Me: Done!

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: That I have a good answer to that question (I don't)... I guess that I don't like people, I love people, it just has to be someone you can relate to.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: Can you do this or that? You'd be surprised, I don't specialise in dubstep for example, but I could.

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Don't worry about if you're wasting my time, ask me a hundred questions and even if you don't work with me, I'm still happy because I got to talk about music. I don't know about the other people on here.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: Laptop, headphones, audio interface and mic. Just those four, if you can't work with the least, you'll never know how to do the most.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I taught myself, I started writing at 10, learnt more and more from every source possible.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: I have no style, I'm not a cool kid. But musically I push boundaries.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: Adele... Are you really going to ask why?

  27. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  28. A: Finding great ideas that some people can't see.

  29. Q: What's your typical work process?

  30. A: As soon as it's a routine, it feels less artistic so I chase inspirational moments in the music, one leads to another and before you know it, we've made art.

  31. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  32. A: It's effective, there are countless million-dollar record deal albums being made in home studios (seriously, just Google it) so I'm not after things that I don't need right now. I have a laptop, some great headphones and monitors, a mic, an interface, a MIDI controller and an assortment of amazing plugins.

  33. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  34. A: Adele, The Weeknd, James Brown, Arethra Franklin, Ariana Grande, Michael Jackson, Lorde, Beyonce, Major Lazer, CHVRCHES... We'll be here all day if you let me go on.

  35. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  36. A: A lot of people will ask either for production or songwriting, it's hardly ever both at the same time.

  37. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  38. A: My first beat, it was awful but it was mine and it was the moment that gave birth to all the other moments.

  39. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  40. A: Projects for some great artists!

  41. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  42. A: Me... I'm just gonna say that like I'm kidding and not have a follow-up answer, I have no shame.

  43. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  44. A: Both, you realise that instead of arguing about which to use, you could actually just make music?
