Hi, I am No Talon. I am a producer, vocalist and a mixer. I have a diploma in Independent Music Production from Seneca College in Toronto Canada and currently work remotely. I started producing when I was 17 and looking for a direction. It started as a joke among friends but quickly developed as a serious passion.

I started with awful edm inspired trap and hip hop and eventually found a lane within the Trip Hop and Experimental scene. Since then I have branched out into many genres mainly centred around bend modern music tropes while remaining melodic and enticing. I have started branching into indie rock/electronic as well as pop.

I am working on a multiple projects independently and would love to offer my assistance in the producing and mixing fields. I am great with direction, the more the merrier. Give me a certain vibe or aesthetic and I can come up with something interesting every time.

Interview with No Talon

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: This indie rock record that I am making has some of my best vocals I've ever recorded and I didn't use any auto tune for the first time in my solo career. I have always been semiconscious about my voice so I would use a vocoder or auto tune to fix the bad notes. But with my progression and constant strides, I have pulled off some amazing stuff on this new project.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I have two solo albums being curated and mixed right now. One indie rock and one trip hop. I have a group project with a few friends that I am currently working on vocal comping and mixing. Hip Hop and Pop

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Digital, I never grew worked analog and I am not coordinated with my hands. I just have a decent brain for the music and digital helps me translate it much better than analog could.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: Quality. Whether its through intrigue or through provocation I want to ensure that we are both happy with what we have created.

  9. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  10. A: That I am not serious. I started as a joke and I can understand being one for a little while. But I take my work very seriously. I even got a diploma for my dedication. I just hope that I can be taken seriously no matter the circumstances.

  11. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  12. A: Be patient. I am a new free lancer and might not translate your ideas perfectly the first time. I offer revisions for a reason so feel free to use them up as you please.

  13. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  15. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  16. A: I started when I was 17, initially as a joke with my friends doing diss tracks in my garage. I quickly developed a passion for having people perform and create over my production and eventually wanted to pursue it legitimately. I have spent the past few years refining my skills on my own and even graduating from Seneca College with a degree in Independent Music Production. I am now working on solo projects but am looking to lend my work to the masses to help grow myself and the music landscape as a whole.

  17. Q: How would you describe your style?

  18. A: My life flashing before my eyes in slow motion. These are the things that I hear. The emotions I feel. The time that I spent.

  19. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  20. A: Jon Brion, I admire everything he has worked on and for in some capacity. His film scores are incredible. His work with Fiona Apple, Frank Ocean and even Mac Miller are all stunning. He's also rather elusive so I love his energy. He's just a stunning act and has an amazing ear.

  21. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  22. A: Know your strength when working with people. For personal tracks I have a tendency to either be really good at drums or melodies. I sometimes have a hard time finding a balance for them and will outsource either one to my friend. However, he is aware of this issues and has since balanced it out himself. Picking up where I usually have slack. I recommend If you are picking up production to always know what the best thing you can do is on any given situation.

  23. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  24. A: If I'm working personally I am slowly trying to blend indie rock and trip hop, however without personal taste in mind I try to keep making whatever sounds good. I'm a big sample flipper so anything with that has me hooked to.

  25. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  26. A: Unique melodic stacks. I have always found a home inside of a deep melodic section and I think my music usually represents that.

  27. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  28. A: I bring a certain scale that isn't achievable without raw emotion. Everything I make carries me with it and I never make, release or share something I don't personally enjoy. Music is my full time passion and I pour everything into what I do at every chance given. This part will hopefully end up getting deleted later but right now I bring a level of vulnerability and potential that you might not get from someone larger on this platform due to time constraints and level of work. I bring a personality that isn't explored yet.

  29. Q: What's your typical work process?

  30. A: I spend an amount of time researching depending on the project. Even if I am aware and confident in a style I can always see what other producer are trying and see what I can modify. For production I just start with a lead. Whether rhythmic or melodic I just try to find a strong through line or identity. From there it's about slowly fleshing out an idea to make it stronger than it could have been. Then from mixing its all about comparing. Again slowly fleshing out things. I often do these process' on different days because I find I alternate moods on which ear I can focus on critically.

  31. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  32. A: I have a Rode NT-1 Setup to a Pre Sonus Audiobox. I have DT 770 Pro headphones and a copy of FL Studio. That's all there is to it.

  33. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  34. A: I love the work that Rick Rubin does. I admire a man without knowledge who has a breathe of prestige. Other than that I love modern acts like JPEGMafia, Cheekface, The Smile. Anything that keeps the cogs turning while I'm listening is enough to keep me provoked. I'm loving the new Billie Eilish record at the time of this answer. Geese had my favourite record of 2023. 3D Country if you want to hear some really fun vocals.

  35. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  36. A: I'm a direction receiver or reviser. I take someones concept and either fit it to the sound I would most likely use or I completely morph it for their direction. If It's not one of those to things I am just a supporting piece. I won't say much unless asked to and will often take any direction.
