Interview with Nicolás Fridman
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I have been playing for 15 years in a string trio named ALTAIR where I play the violin and make arrangements along with my partners. (@altairok)
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I always have a chamber music concert ahead.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I haven't looked yet.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Analog, I love to hear the sound directly from its source.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: High quality performance and commitment.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: It's always a new adventure.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: How much will it take. I usually do it quickly, but won't handle something if I don't like how it sounds.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Thinking I only play classical just because I play the violin.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What type of sound they are looking for, what the composition means to them, why do they want a violin line, etc.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: The most important thing is to know what you are looking for.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: It's ok with my violin (maybe a spare string set)
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started as a young boy in 1996. I studied with very important teachers in Buenos Aires (including the National Symphony Orchestra's concertmaster and the 2nd violins Guide). I keep taking lessons regularly.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Passionate
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Anyone, as long as they take it seriously.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always feel the music.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Classical music, but I really like rock, pop and electronic. As an argentinian I also play tango.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My musicality, vibrato, intonation and good sense of the rythm.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: My 25+ years of violin playing and my will to make high quality music.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I first listen to the theme, then study the music sheet or compose a violin line and then go to the studio.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I record in a studio using an Audiotechnica PRO 35 (ambient microphone optative).
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: For popular music: 2 cellos. My favorite violinist of all times is David Oistrakh, but I like new generation violinist like Augustin Hadelich or Hillary Hahn.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I can play and record any music sheet you send me, create and record a violin line for your compositions, or make a string arrangement.
