Your EDM Mix Specialist

Giovanni Whelan on SoundBetter

I'm passionate about EDM and love working with artists to make their music shine. My goal is to deliver mixes that capture the energy of your tracks, with the clarity and punch that takes them to the next level.

Hi! I'm Gio, an audio engineer with a passion for electronic dance music. I understand the nuances that make great EDM records, and translate that into impactful mixes.

I provide professional-level mixing services tailored specifically to EDM and its subgenres. My goal is to help you achieve a powerful, polished sound that captures the essence of your music.

I hold a Diploma in Professional Recording Arts from Lasalle College, Vancouver. During my education, I honed my skills in audio engineering, recording, music production, composition, mixing, mastering, sound design, and post-production.

My main focus is mixing but I can ghost produce, compose for films, and do a variety of other audio related work.

I've been making & mixing EDM for years and have a deep understanding of what makes tracks within the genre stand out.

Interview with Giovanni Whelan

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I'm proud of my remix of 'Duck". Initial idea was completed in one day. I find those are always the best records. Duck also demonstrates my ability to work quickly & efficiently while still ensuring the song translates well.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm always creating & mixing new music.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: Your mix will be the absolute best it can be.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: I love the collaborative aspect. Taking an artist's vision and helping them bring it to fruition. It's extremely satisfying hearing a finished song and knowing I played a role in making it the best it can be.

  9. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  10. A: That it's just about "making it sound good". While it is about making it sound good, a great mix also enhances and communicates the artist's intentions for the song.

  11. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  12. A: Look for an engineer who takes the time to listen to your goals and whose vision aligns with yours. Open communication is crucial to achieve a final mix that truly represents your work.

  13. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  14. A: My laptop, headphones, a solar-powered charger, a hammock (gotta stay comfy while mixing!), and a guide to edible island plants because safety first!

  15. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  16. A: My passion for audio started as a hobby and has fueled a seven-year journey of skill development. This includes a Diploma in Professional Recording Arts from LaSalle College, experience as a mixing engineer in two local studios, releasing my own music, and freelancing as an audio professional.

  17. Q: How would you describe your style?

  18. A: My mixing style prioritizes cleanness, punch, and achieving a competitive loudness level. While EDM has unfortunately not made it past their 'loudness wars' phase, I've honed techniques through experimentation and practice to ensure your tracks maintain power and definition alongside today's top releases.

  19. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  20. A: While mixing can offer endless technical possibilities, I believe in the power of focused choices. Setting levels, subtle EQ changes, a touch of compression, and thoughtful stereo placement can create a professional, impactful mix.

  21. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  22. A: While I can mix various genres, I specialize in EDM. I have a particular passion for the energy and creative potential within the genre.

  23. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  24. A: I'd say my biggest strength is my ability to create a focused mix. I can layer and manipulate sounds in a way that makes them both cohesive and clearly defined, allowing each instrument and vocal element its own place within the mix.

  25. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  26. A: I bridge the gap between the artist's vision and the final product. I combine my expertise in mixing with a discerning ear and a touch of creative flair. This allows me to work alongside the artist, refining their music and translating it into an impactful listening experience.

  27. Q: What's your typical work process?

  28. A: After discussing the artist's vision for the song, I start by listening to the entire track to fully grasp their direction and the feeling they want to convey. Throughout the mixing process, I prioritize client feedback and collaboration to achieve a final product that perfectly reflects their goal.

  29. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  30. A: My bread and butter is taking a song and transforming it into a polished, cohesive mix that stays true to the artist's vision. I can mix a variety of genres but my specialty is EDM.

  31. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  32. A: I'm new here so unfortunately, no.

  33. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  34. A: Both! I love the sonic character of analog gear, but the flexibility of digital is essential, so I tend to lean digital.

  35. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  36. A: "Can you make it sound like this popular song?" Yes! My goal is to help the artist achieve their vision for the song, and that includes reference tracks.

  37. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  38. A: I like to ask: - Can you share some reference tracks that represent the sonic direction you envision? - What emotions do you want your music to convey? - Are there any specific elements of the mix you'd like to highlight?

  39. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  40. A: Skrillex. His stuff is next level.

  41. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  42. A: I use Ableton and Bitwig as my main DAW's but I also own Pro Tools, and Logic. I have both monitors and headphones, an audio interface, and a large collection of industry standard VST's.

  43. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  44. A: I'm constantly inspired by Skrillex and Noisia for their insanely clean mixes, KOAN Sound for their creativity, and producers like Rick Rubin for their skill in bringing out the unique essence of an artist.
