Gustav Scheel

Indie, Folk, Rock Mixing

Gustav Scheel on SoundBetter

House engineer in Copenhagen based recording studio "Frostbox Studios" since 2016. Credits include Macklemore, Lucas Graham, Dev Hynes (Blood Orange) and many more. Now working from my private studio as a mixing engineer, specialized in genres like Indie, Folk, Lofi, Psych Rock, Synth Pop, Classic Rock.

My name is Gustav. I live in Copenhagen (Denmark) with my wife Julie and son Magne. I’ve been playing in multiple bands for the last 14 years. I have been on both sides of the recording process, and in the recent couple of years I have focused mostly on mixing. I know how daunting it can be to send off songs to a stranger. I therefore always offer a zoom meeting before beginning the mix process, to make sure we are on the same page in terms of the feel and overall artistic vision of the project.

Most of my audio engineering experience comes from Frostbox Recording Studios where I was working from 2016-2020. During my time there, I ran recording sessions with artists like Macklemore, Lukas Graham, Dev Hynes (Blood Orange) and many more.
Today I work from my private studio in Copenhagen. Every mix i do goes through the SSL FUSION, with the SSL 4000G bus compressor inserted. If a need real analog chorusing effects (which i often do) i go through my TC electronics 1210. I also utilize my TEAC 3440 Reel to reel tape machine to add dirt and saturation to varius elements. Everything else i do with plugins.
My studio desk in centered around the SSL UF8, and UC1. (Yes i’m an SSL fanboy). These controllers allows my to switch off my computer monitor, to fully immerse myself into the music without any fancy plugin screens distracting me from the music.

Interview with Gustav Scheel

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: My first album (Moonstruck, Spine of man) just because it was my first full length album, and i learned so much from that process. For more recent projects, i'm very proud of Lucky Doom's first EP "Fieldwork". I recorded the drums for the EP in my living room, and mixed record. Very proud of how that turned out

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I just finished an album for a danish rockband called "RÆS". Currently i'm mixing an Ep for an Americana artist called Lucky doom.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: No i'm very new to the site.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both Analog for saturation and bus processing. (Also i like turning knobs) Digital for everything else

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: That i will never send off any mix that i'm not 100 % satisfied with myself

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Almost everything! The freedom of managing my own time. The many interesting people i get to build relations with. Just being a part of making great music, is something i value everyday.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: most questions are about my fees. I tell them that i have a fixed fee for now.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That i have a magic button that turns a badly performed song into a good one. The mix is never going to sound professional, if it's not played and arranged well.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I like to get a couple of reference points. It can be artists or songs. Just to make sure that were on the same page before I start mixing.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Listen to your gut feeling. Select people that specialize in the kind of genre that you make. Don't pick someone that does everything.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Soothe 2 (Plugin) - It saves me so much time Melodyne (Plugin) - Very hard to live without Tc1210 Flanger/Chorus - No plugin chorus comes close SSL UF8 - I can't go back to mixing without faders ever SSL Buscomp- Because is so much a part of the sound that i get from a mix

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: Most of my audio engineering experience comes from Frostbox Recording Studios where I was working as a recording engineer from 2016-2020. I recorded a lot of bands and artist, and started mixing on an analog desk. I mixed 3 albums and a bunch of Ep's. The studio closed down two years ago, and since then i have worked from my private studio in Copenhagen.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My style of mixing is generally warm, griddy and very present.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would love to work with The War On Drugs. Because i'm just such a big fan of Adam Granduciel and Sean Everett

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: keep your session clean! and do all the boring session prepping the night before mixing.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I work mostly on Indie rock/pop, Lofi, Psych rock, Folk and Americana

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: I spend a lot of time in the drum/bass section of the song, to make sure that the rhythm and groove feels right. I'm also a big sucker for mixing distortion and chorus/flanger effects on guitars and bass.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring a lot of attention to detail and respect for the artist and song.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Typically I do all the session prep the day before mixing. I like to listen to the roughmix a few times the day before, to get inspired by the track. I never agree to any project that i can't see myself improving. I'm a pretty slow mixer, since i really want to experiment with the sounds that i receive. Sometimes a mix can take more than two whole workdays for me.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: Every mix i do goes through the SSL FUSION, with the SSL 4000G bus compressor inserted.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I'm very inspired by Sean Everett and the work he has done with "The War On Drugs". I love the way he experiments in the studio. I also enjoy watching Tchad Blake, and his style of mixing with distortion and saturation. Peter Katis is also a big influence, since he have mixed a lot of my favorite records.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I mix original multi tracks from artists all around the world. I use a combination of great analog equipment and high quality digital plugins (Uad, Ssl, Oeksound, Waves, Apogee..) Sometimes i do vocal comping and tuning, as well as drum replacement, and quantization.
