Interview with Ajmw Beats
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I studied music technology as an undergraduate for 3 years. During my final year my personal music releases under the alias Ajmw started gaining traction on Spotify. From there I released more music, performed live and as a DJ on radio stations across London, Hamburg and Los Angeles. I have now been a self employed music producer for 7+ years. I furthered my studies by completing a MSc masters degree in music and audio for film and games.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Lofi Hip Hop or downtempo electronic music.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: When working alone, I will start either start with the melody or sample and build the track around the main instruments. When working with a client I like to get them to provide as much reference material as possible. For example their desired mood, sound and reference tracks. After this I will gather instruments and samples to build a library of material that I use to speed up my workflow, I will then start the track with either melody or drums depending on the desired final results.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Over the last 3 years I have been minimising my studio setup to narrow it down to 4 pieces of hardware I need to create the best professional sounding results. These Included - Yamaha Hs7, Shure srh1540 Monitor Headphones, Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 Interface and my Razer Blade 17 laptop. Ableton and Reaper DAW's and a broad selection of industry standard VST's help me obtain my high quality results.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: My peers within the lofi hip hop scene inspire me everyday. I have been involved with this genre for 7+ years and have grown my career alongside some of the biggest names in the genre, which I frequently collaborate with. Artists such as Arbour, Chief. Hm Surf, Tomppabeats & Laffey are an example of who I worked with over the years.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I specialise in custom music production, whether that is for a record label, artists or brand. I specialise in lofi hip hop production so I am typically brought onboard to create unique music or provide professional mixing & mastering projects within genre.
