Micah Jacob on SoundBetter

Hi, I am Micah Jacob, I have been working as an Audio Engineer for over 10 years. From touring in bands around the U.S.A, operating live and broadcast meetings for corporate/nonprofit businesses, mixing front of house for bands and cultural performances, and producing talented songwriters, I have found a love for my career in the world of Audio!

From Musician to Front of House to Music Producer, I always hope to bring the best presentation of your material to your listeners. Having spent much time learning and practicing skills at the mixing desk, I would enjoy working with you to help meet your technical and creative needs. I can work in post production editing, tuning, and mixing, as well as recording on site or in a studio.

Interview with Micah Jacob

  1. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  2. A: That equipment always works perfectly, and it is easy to use.

  3. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  4. A: What kind of sound are you going for? What is your style? Who are your influences?

  5. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  6. A: Look for someone with experience that you feel like you can communicate well with.

  7. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  8. A: A computer already stocked with all my software, an interface, a full 88 key midi controller, an SM57, and an Acoustic guitar. Hopefully there is electricity!!

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: I have been writing, recording and producing since I was 19 (About 11 years). I started touring and recording with a band at 15 and grew to love making music. I have been working through the industry in different ways like directing AV departments for places like churches, conference centers, and colleges. As well as freelance audio technician for multiple production companies. I still keep my self busy working in every ways I can. And I hope to continue to be busy using my audio expertise.

  11. Q: How would you describe your style?

  12. A: I'm always shooting for clarity first and adding the saturation that can make tracks blend together. I think I would hope to have a competitive style to the top 40 hits of today, yet willing to be creative in new areas and even go for new takes of old school sounds of the past.

  13. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  14. A: Not sure. Great question, I guess I would chose the artist that I would learn the lost from.

  15. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  16. A: Be willing to keep your faders and stereo spectrum moving in a way that keeps your listener engaged.

  17. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  18. A: Acoustic led songwriters and rock bands, but I am very open to working on many others.

  19. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  20. A: I am quick at troubleshooting signal issues.

  21. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  22. A: I believe I can bring a tasteful touch to the musical sound both is production choice and in mixing.

  23. Q: What's your typical work process?

  24. A: When producing a track I like to get the base of the performance from the artists, explore different direction we can take and make some key decisions together, then track instruments as professionally as possible. Get the bulk of the editing and quantizing done before producing vocals. Then I spend a large amount of time making the vocals sound the best they can and creating a mix.

  25. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  26. A: While having access to a professional mixing and isolation room, I am mostly setup with my Macbook through a Presonus 16 input interface, with a Midi 25 key for production extras, and always a nice assortment of dynamics and condenser microphones.

  27. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  28. A: I am a fan of Greg Wells and Dave Pensado as mixers, and Ellie Goulding, Snow Patrol, Ed Sheeran, Bebe Rexha, and Calvin Harris as musicians and writers.

  29. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  30. A: I am mostly commonly helping singer songwriters to find the most effective way to present their music according to their taste. Producing, adding instruments, as well as editing and mixing.
