Interview with Mod-G

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: In the past few months I've worked a full album entitled Transition Live by Young Saint (CHH Rapper) and it was a wonderful experience to be able to have every last tracked played, produced and mixed at Gat 3 Productions in Charlotte, NC. It was a dream come true to have spent hours around one of the most famous boards of our day. I had the experience of a lifetime and the album is set to be released this year.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Currently working on a few independent projects, and also partnering with a christian writer to finish up an album by 2018.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: A phenomenal producer/programmer/ session musician by the name of Chris Adams. I highly recommend him.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Whatever get's the job done. It's not about what you use, it's how you use it.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: To always do business CORRECTLY and stay true to my word. If i say I'm committed to taking on this job, I'm fully committed.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I get the freedom to work with so many people, and i also get to get paid doing what i love to do.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: The biggest misconception is that what we do shouldn't cost as much as we name it to be.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: What kind of project format is this? What is your overall budget for your project? What's the goal for this project? Do you have a marketing strategy for this project? etc

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Find someone who is resourceful, reliable and can deliver whenever, wherever and however.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: Macbook FULLY LOADED, Microphone, Studio Monitors, UA interface and Hotspot for Wifi

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: Music has always been my choice of career. I've been doing this since i was about 12-13 years old. I got serious around High School.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: Very Eclectic.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: I would love to work with Jon Bellion because just watching his videos, I love his creative process. It's a lot similar to mine in a way.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: One music production tip I'd say to anybody whether their just getting started and/or working in it consecutively is to find your work flow. It's nothing like being in a session and not knowing your work flow. How you vibe says everything in the room that you are in. Whether it's finding a connection to the beat, or if there isn't a beat all...Find your work flow. It's called "Music Production"...you're producing a body of work to give to yourself or clients.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: Most projects i get hired for are, Hip-Hop- Christian and/or Pop-Rock. I LOVE Pop music!!!

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: My strongest skill is Production, Mixing and Top- Line Melodies

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: I'd like to believe what I bring to a song is authenticity. Music has to come from a authentic place, and i believe as a producer/musician it takes being in tune with that one song to know what it takes. Energy is one thing I'm always told i bring. A big sound is another thing i was told i bring to a record. But it's all based on the vision and what the artist need is.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: My work process typically depends on the project I'm hired for. For instance, if I'm writing a song or a chorus, i tend to build my lyrics around top-line melodies. All because for me that is the most important part of the lyrical foundation. Again, it's case by case depending on project.

  37. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  38. A: Timbaland & Ryan Leslie inspire me both in all aspects. From the way they've built not just a career for in the music business, but outside of that, making investments in themselves and others while continuing to build longevity in the music business.

  39. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  40. A: Clients mainly hire me to produce and mix records for them. From tracking (beat-making), arranging and co-writing the song. If we're working remotely then most likely they will record vocals at another studio and send them to me via WeTransfer.
