Interview with RJ REDMANE

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I have a couple of remixes that I made for a Chainsmokers and NOTD remix competition that I loved working on, as they have a good level of complexitiy and details, plus, it was really fun making them. I also have a good amount of saved projects that I have made for other artists I know and right now we are making them happen. As I said, I also possess a decent amount of non posted beats and songs ideas that I´ll gladly share.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: A lot of beats to post on Youtube, Beatstars, Instagram and Tik Tok with the objective of selling them and expanding my reach, and a couple of songs with a couple of local artists that I know and like a lot as people and musicians.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Analog is cool and helpful if you know how to use it, but it´s not always a must-have and it´s expensive. Digital gives you more freedom on quantity, as you only depend on your PC´s storage and it can also be more affordable. Either way, it´s not the gear, it´s the ear.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: That I´ll make your project go to the next level and deliver quality in a decent period of time.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: That it makes me wanna get out of bed and not go to bed. Everyday.

  11. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  12. A: That it´s easy and that anyone can do it. Sometimes people also confuse a DJ and a Producer.

  13. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  14. A: What do you need? How would you like this to sound? Any special FX you want me to use? How much creative freedom can I have?

  15. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  16. A: I may be new to this, but if you trust I´ll show you I can deliver quality.

  17. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  18. A: My computer, my headphones, an everlasting connection to wifi, a power source and my MIDI controller.

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: I started making music when I was 14. I´m 22 now, and I have acquired a lot of knowledge both in college and by myself. I managed this by dedicating time to making and mixing music by trial and error and also by reasearching thouroughly about it. I do this almost everyday, because you can learn something new always.

  21. Q: How would you describe your style?

  22. A: Precise and creative.

  23. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  24. A: That´s a long answer. I love many artists and genres, so that makes it a really hard choice. Even though, my top 3 would definitely be, with no order whatsoever: Ariana Grande, Martin Garrix and Bad Bunny.

  25. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  26. A: I can share two: 1. Work with a 30m or 1h timer when you´re starting an idea, it forces you to not overthink and work faster. 2. Enjoy and love what you do. Making music is supposed to be fun!

  27. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  28. A: As I said earlier, I´ve been working on a lot of genres lately, those include Hip Hop, EDM, Trap, Boom Bap, Reggaeton and Pop. I love many genres and also love making them, breaking them and experimenting with them too.

  29. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  30. A: Compromise. I´ll devote my 100% on your project if you trust me.

  31. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  32. A: I bring the best I can get, I like putting small details and I care a lot about all transitions. Also, I try on new things that could make a difference on the project, that being some ear candy, a weird automation that fits the song, different sounds, etc.

  33. Q: What's your typical work process?

  34. A: When it comes to producing: First, I put a 30m timer to get the main idea going, then I organize it and work on the arrangement. I do this process a couple of times until I put all the sounds and basic automations I want have on the track, then I do a pre-mix to get it sound decent. When it comes to mixing: First, I organize the project and color code everything, then I go through the gain-stage phase, I EQ, compress, put time FX and any creative mixing I want to get done. I work normally on 1 hour periods and then rest my ears, sometimes I keep going, others, I go to a different session to not overwork my ears on one single project. My mixing process goes for 2 days max. When I finish, I do a basic master almost always just to get and idea of what I want and how it would sound already mastered. I do this to check if I´m doing a good job with the mix.

  35. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  36. A: I have a basic home studio setup that composes of a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, an AK49 MIDI controller, a pair of Audio-technica ATH Mx50s and a pair of Eris 4.5.

  37. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  38. A: I like everything Martin Garrix does, same for producers and artists such as Kenny Beats, CXDY, Tainy, Sky, Calvin Harris, The Chainsmokers, Habstrakt and Ian Kirkpatrick. I really like Chris Lord Alge, Andrew Schepps and Greg Kurstin as engineers too.

  39. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  40. A: I´ve been working on a lot of genres lately, those which include Hip Hop, EDM, Trap, Boom Bap, Reggaeton, Rock and Pop. So I can pretty much be versatile for my client´s needs.
