Interview with Walter Costa

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Slow Motion Bossa Nova, by Celso Fonseca and Ronaldo Bastos. I love this album and love the fact that it is a world wide success. I have listen to songs from this album, all over the globe. I recorded and mixed the whole album.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Independent singer/writer alternative rock - Cris Braun, Gospel rock band A Rede and Original Soundtrack for a tv mini serie.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Mastering Engineer Carlos Freitas.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I could say analog, but only if I have the time and the budget, if not. Digital!

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I'll give it my best. Always.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: listen to the songs in the Radio, or playing on somebody soudsystem, and see people enjoying. Been part of the creative processe that lead to that moment.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Q: How soon? A: Soon enough Q: How much? Q: Not too much, not too little.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That I always can make miracles . Sometimes I can, but not always. :-)

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What is the style. What platform. What are your expectations. What do you think is most important. What is the song about.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Keep a opened mind.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: A macbook pro loaded with ProTools and plugins, my UAD2 Octo Satellite, Hafler HA15 headphone amp, Sennheiser HD650 headphones, and a satellite Internet connection.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started playing drums in some Heavy Metal College bands. After that, when I started to record with those band, I felt that I like the production and recording aspect of the thing more rewarding. So, in 1989 I attended Full Sail University and from there I have never stopped working in the music production field.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Clean and punchy.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Peter Gabriel. I guess because I decided to work with music listening to his records.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Keep the song flowing. Do not let technical issues get in the way. So, be organised and think ahead.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Pop, Rock, World music

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: I go for the unusual whenever I can.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I have 30+ in the music industries. Great part of that as a mixing engineer. I guess I could say that I bring that. I like to try to give a unique approach to every mix.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: First I try to listens to the song as it comes. After this first listening, I try to get to understand every single track, soloing, identifying problems and relationships with other tracks. Then I start to organize the session, in order to get a good workflow during the mixing. From there, I usually go to drums, then lead vocals. After that I just follow the flow of the song. If I can identify a good reference for the song, in style and sound, I might bring it to the mix and listen as I go.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I have a production studio in Orlando, Florida, based around a ProTools 12HD , lots of analog and plugin synths; and I have a personal mixing setup, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In my mixing studio. I have a ProTools 10HD3 setup, Genelec and Yamaha, monitors, Euphonixs MC Control surface, hundreds of plugins, UAD2 Satellite.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: I do mostly mixing. Also work as producer.
