Sydney Burris on SoundBetter

-Dynamic, highly adaptable vocalist with experience in recording/writing pop, rock, jazz, and musical theater -B.A. in Commercial Music ( Florida State University, 2013) -Currently Lead/BGV vocalist/Co-writer in "Goons" (80s inspired indie pop/rock band from Austin, TX) -Certified Vocal Coach (trained w/ Justin Stoney at New York Vocal Coaching)

I have 25 years of vocal experience from studio to arena--singing and collaborating with others is pretty much my favorite thing! I enjoy creating compelling lead performances as much as creating rich BGV textures that support someone else's voice. Because the voice is my first instrument, my songwriting is greatly influenced by it--I love creating interesting top lines, melodies and lyrics that showcase specific voice types. I grew up and was trained in both classical and contemporary environments, so I enjoy exploring how both of these influence my work.

Creative collaboration is an exciting process, and I aim to make my end of it as positive and stress free as possible so that everyone has an enjoyable experience! It's a humbling thing to get to participate in anyone else's creation, and I will bring my best to help craft your vision.

SERVICES OFFERED:
- Vocal Performance (Lead and/or BGV's, including arrangement if necessary)
- Songwriting (Vocal Melody and/or Lyrics)
- Vocal Coaching (1 hour sessions)

Thanks for considering me as part of your project!

-Sydney

I am so glad to have found Sydney on SoundBetter! She delivered tracks that met my specs to perfection. This is also the first time I received a lead vocal track where nothing had to be redone -- Sydney nailed the performance in just one session. Her turnaround time was amazingly fast, and her communication was clear and prompt. She's a true pro and a pleasure to work with!

Sydney is in a league of her own. The execution and creativity she brought to my track “Good it Hurts” took a dull track and turned it pro. I’ve never met anyone as in tune with their own voice and helping you find yours as the Sensational Miss Sydney.

Sydney is such a musical asset ...she’s professional, upbeat, always learning, a good listener, and ultimately wants to see you succeed. Whether you’re looking for a mentor to guide you through a new approach to your singing, or you’re looking to record vocal harmonies that are tricky to find—Sydney’s background is formal and educated, yet her adaptive and imaginative talents are always in tune with your goals.

Interview with Sydney Burris

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: I'm about to take a songwriting course taught by Charlie Puth--definitely looking forward to what that will draw out of me.

  3. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  4. A: Timothy Cole Burris--he is one of the most efficient and detailed producers I've ever worked with.

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: That I get to put my creativity to work and participate in a community that places value on art.

  7. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  8. A: Kimbra. Her album "Vows" was the first modern pop album I heard that made me believe I might be able to be a contemporary singer--I loved how much she was experimenting with her vocal sound, and it was in a way that felt familiar to my own voice.

  9. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  10. A: Nostalgia inspired pop and singer/songwriter

  11. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  12. A: My ear for harmonies and blending

  13. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  14. A: Emotional connection, technical skill, and pure enjoyment

  15. Q: What's your typical work process?

  16. A: For songwriting, it's 50/50 whether I land on melody or lyrics first--but lyrics are what I will work the hardest for. For recording vocals, it's a good vocal warm up, getting physically comfortable in the space, and then going for multiple takes trying out different options. Depending on the nature of the song, I will either piece together the best takes or work to capture the best full take for a live performance feel.

  17. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  18. A: Barbra Streisand, Freddie Mercury, and anyone who every made movie musicals

  19. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  20. A: Writing catchy songs and recording clean, solid, stacked vocals
