Interview with Stefan Blabensteiner

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One project I’m particularly proud of is the work I did mastering several tracks for Like Mike, who is half of the renowned DJ duo Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike. In addition to his work with the duo, Like Mike also pursues solo projects, and I had the opportunity to master a number of his tracks. My role in this project was to ensure that each song was polished to the highest standard and ready for release. This involved fine-tuning the audio to enhance its clarity, balance, and overall impact, while also preserving the unique elements and energy of Like Mike’s music. Working with a high-profile artist like Like Mike was both challenging and rewarding. It required a deep understanding of his musical style and a meticulous approach to mastering to achieve the best possible sound. I’m proud of this project because it allowed me to contribute to the success of a well-respected artist and to see my work complement his innovative sound. The experience was a testament to the impact that professional mastering can have on a track, and it was gratifying to be a part of such a significant project in the electronic music scene.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Currently, I’m working on a range of exciting projects. On the production side, I’m developing some of my own original tracks, exploring new sounds and experimenting with different genres to push the boundaries of my creative expression. In addition to my own work, I’m actively involved in mixing and mastering for a diverse group of clients. This includes a variety of genres and styles, from independent artists to established bands. Each project presents its own unique challenges and opportunities, allowing me to apply my skills and experience to bring out the best in every track. Balancing personal production with client work keeps me engaged and inspired, as it allows me to continuously evolve my craft while contributing to others' musical visions. The combination of working on my own music and collaborating with clients provides a dynamic and rewarding experience.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Yes, I can definitely recommend Austin Leeds on SoundBetter. Austin is a highly skilled producer and engineer known for his exceptional work in electronic music and beyond. His expertise spans various genres, and he has a strong reputation for delivering high-quality mixes and masters that stand out. What sets Austin apart is his keen understanding of modern production techniques and his ability to bring a fresh, creative approach to each project. He combines technical proficiency with a deep artistic sense, making him an excellent choice for clients looking to elevate their music. If you’re seeking someone who can provide both technical excellence and creative insight, Austin Leeds is a fantastic option. His dedication to achieving the best results for his clients makes him a standout professional in the industry.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both analog and digital have their unique strengths, and each can be valuable depending on the context and goals of a project. However, my preference tends to lean towards digital for several reasons: Precision and Flexibility - Digital systems offer unparalleled precision in audio processing and allow for extensive flexibility. With digital tools, I can make highly accurate adjustments and recall settings with ease, which is crucial for maintaining consistency throughout the mixing and mastering process. Convenience of Recall - One of the biggest advantages of digital is the ability to easily recall settings and make revisions. This capability ensures that we can make adjustments efficiently and ensure that every detail is just right, without the need to reset hardware or reconfigure analog equipment. Integration and Efficiency - Digital platforms integrate seamlessly with other software and hardware, streamlining the workflow and enhancing overall efficiency. This integration allows for more sophisticated processing and creative possibilities that can be crucial for achieving the best sound. Consistency and Stability - Digital systems provide a stable and consistent environment for processing audio. Unlike analog equipment, which can be subject to wear and fluctuations, digital tools maintain the same level of performance and quality throughout the project. That said, analog gear has its own unique character and can be valuable for certain applications. I appreciate the warmth and color that analog equipment can bring, and I often use hybrid approaches to combine the best of both worlds, integrating analog processes where they can enhance the sound while leveraging the precision and flexibility of digital tools. Ultimately, the choice between analog and digital depends on the specific needs of the project and the desired sound, but for many modern applications, digital offers a level of precision and convenience that is highly advantageous.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: What I enjoy most about my job is the opportunity to help artists realize their vision and elevate their music to its fullest potential. There's something incredibly satisfying about taking a raw recording and transforming it into a polished, professional-sounding track. I love the creative challenge of finding the perfect balance in a mix, the artistry involved in shaping the final sound, and the technical precision required to ensure that everything translates well across different listening environments. Each project is unique, and I get to collaborate closely with artists to enhance their music in ways that resonate with their artistic intent. Additionally, the process of mixing and mastering often involves solving intricate audio puzzles and making critical decisions that can significantly impact the final product. It’s deeply rewarding to see the positive reactions from clients when they hear their music in its best possible form, knowing that my work has contributed to their success and satisfaction. In essence, it’s the combination of creativity, technical expertise, and the joy of seeing artists' visions come to life that makes my job truly fulfilling.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: Customers often have several common questions when they come to me for mixing and mastering. Here are a few of the most frequently asked: Can You Make the Vocal Louder? - This is a common request, and the answer is usually yes, but it’s important to consider how this adjustment will impact the overall mix. I assess the vocal in the context of the entire track to ensure that increasing its volume enhances the mix without disrupting the balance or clarity of other elements. How Many Revisions Are Included? - Clients often inquire about the number of revisions included in the service. I explain that a certain number of revisions are typically part of the package, and additional revisions can be accommodated if needed. Clear communication about feedback and expectations helps ensure the final mix or master meets their satisfaction. What Format Will the Final Files Be Delivered In? - Clients frequently ask about the formats in which they will receive their final files. I provide options based on their needs, whether it’s WAV, MP3, or other formats, and discuss any specifications required for different distribution platforms. How Long Will the Process Take? - Timeline questions are common, and I offer a realistic estimate based on the complexity of the project and my current workload. I emphasize the importance of allowing enough time for quality work while also considering any deadlines the client may have. What Is the Cost of Your Services? - Pricing is a key question, and I provide a transparent breakdown of costs based on the scope of the project. I explain that rates can vary depending on factors such as the number of tracks, complexity of the work, and specific requirements. I aim to offer a fair and competitive price while ensuring high-quality results. What’s the Difference Between Mixing and Mastering? - Many clients are curious about the distinct roles of mixing and mastering. I explain that mixing involves balancing and processing individual tracks to create a cohesive whole, while mastering focuses on finalizing the track for distribution, ensuring it sounds polished and consistent across all playback systems. By addressing these questions, I aim to provide clarity and set the stage for a smooth and successful collaboration.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: One of the biggest misconceptions about mixing and mastering is that it’s simply about using the right tools or following a set formula to achieve a great sound. While having access to high-quality equipment and plugins is important, the real essence of what we do goes beyond just technical know-how. Many people assume that achieving a professional-sounding mix or master is straightforward and that any engineer can deliver the same results with similar tools. However, the craft of mixing and mastering involves a deep understanding of both the artistic and technical aspects of audio production. It’s about knowing when and how to apply various techniques to enhance the music while preserving its original intent and character. The process involves making critical decisions on what to emphasize or de-emphasize in a mix, how to balance different elements, and how to apply processing in a way that complements the overall vision of the track. It also requires an acute sense of judgment to know what to avoid, which techniques might not suit a particular project, and how to adapt approaches based on the unique needs of each song. Ultimately, the goal is to use our expertise to bring out the best in a track, ensuring it sounds polished and cohesive while still reflecting the artist’s vision. It’s this blend of creativity, experience, and technical skill that defines the work of a mixing and mastering engineer.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: When engaging with prospective clients, I ask several key questions to understand their needs and ensure that we can achieve the best possible results. Here are some of the questions I typically ask: What is Your Vision for the Project? - I want to understand the artistic direction and goals for the music. This includes any specific sounds, moods, or influences you have in mind. This helps me align the mixing and mastering process with your creative vision. Have You Ever Thought About How Your Music Would Sound if Mixed and Mastered Externally? - This question helps gauge your expectations and openness to external input. It also allows us to discuss the potential benefits of professional mixing and mastering, and how it can elevate your music to the next level. What are Your Reference Tracks? - Providing examples of songs that capture the sound you're aiming for is extremely helpful. This gives me a clear benchmark for the desired sound and style. Can You Describe the Production Process? - Understanding how the music was recorded and produced helps me identify any potential issues or specific needs in the mixing and mastering stages. This includes details about the recording environment, any processing already applied, and the overall quality of the tracks. What Are Your Technical Specifications? - Information about the format and quality of the files you'll be providing, as well as any specific delivery requirements (e.g., file types, sample rates, etc.), ensures that the process runs smoothly and meets your needs. What is Your Timeline and Budget? - Knowing your deadlines and budget constraints helps me manage the project efficiently and set realistic expectations for both sides. What Are Your Expectations for Revisions? - It’s important to discuss how many rounds of revisions you anticipate and your preferences for feedback. This helps in planning and ensures that we can accommodate your needs effectively. By asking these questions, I can tailor my approach to meet your expectations and deliver a final product that aligns with your vision.

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: When hiring a provider like myself for mixing and mastering, there are several key pieces of advice that can help ensure a successful collaboration: Prioritize High-Quality Audio Files - Make sure to provide high-resolution audio files. The better the quality of the original recordings, the better the final mix and master will be. High-quality samples give us more flexibility and fidelity to work with, resulting in a more polished and professional final product. Communicate Your Vision Clearly - It’s important to articulate your artistic vision and goals for the project. Share references, specific preferences, and any details about the sound you’re aiming for. Clear communication helps ensure that the final product aligns with your expectations. Provide Detailed Feedback - Be prepared to give constructive feedback during the process. This allows for any necessary adjustments and refinements to be made, ensuring that the final mix or master meets your standards. Understand the Process - Familiarize yourself with the basics of mixing and mastering. Knowing what to expect can help you make informed decisions and set realistic timelines. It also allows you to engage more effectively in the process. Trust the Professional’s Expertise - While your input is valuable, trust in the expertise of the provider. Professionals bring experience and knowledge to the table that can enhance the quality of your project. Collaboration works best when there is mutual respect and a balance between your vision and their technical expertise. By following these tips, you’ll be better prepared to achieve outstanding results and ensure a smooth and productive working relationship.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: If I were stranded on a desert island and could only take five pieces of gear, I’d carefully select the essentials that would allow me to continue my work and stay connected with my passion for music. Here’s what I’d choose: Genelec 8050 Studio Monitors - These monitors are crucial for accurate sound reproduction, which is essential for mixing and mastering. Their clarity and precision would ensure that I could still produce high-quality work even in an unconventional setting. High-Performance Windows PC - This would be my main tool for running my digital audio workstation and plugins. A powerful PC is necessary for handling complex projects and processing audio efficiently. RME Fireface 802 Audio Interface - Essential for high-quality audio capture and playback, this interface ensures that I can record and monitor audio with exceptional fidelity, which is critical for maintaining professional standards. Audient Nero Monitor Controller - This would help me manage the audio output from my monitors and control levels with precision, which is vital for a balanced and effective mixing environment. A Selection of Essential Plugins - While it’s hard to narrow it down, having a curated set of essential plugins (EQs, compressors, reverbs, etc.) would allow me to maintain flexibility and creativity in my mixing and mastering work. These five pieces of gear would enable me to continue producing high-quality audio work and stay connected to my craft, even in the most challenging of circumstances.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: My career path in audio engineering began with a deep personal passion for music and technology. I started by experimenting with audio production on my personal computer, honing my skills and learning the basics through trial and error. This hands-on experience was invaluable in developing my initial understanding of mixing and mastering. A few years later, I decided to formalize my knowledge and skills by enrolling in a comprehensive Audio Engineering Course. This education provided me with a solid foundation in both the technical and creative aspects of audio production, and it helped refine my approach to mixing and mastering. Following my studies, I gained practical experience working in various studios. This period was crucial for applying what I had learned and for learning from industry professionals. It also allowed me to build a diverse portfolio and gain insights into different production techniques. In 2013, I made the transition to working as a freelance audio engineer. This shift allowed me to work on a wide range of projects and collaborate with different artists, further expanding my experience and expertise. Since then, I’ve been dedicated to delivering high-quality audio services and continuing to grow as a professional in the industry. Overall, my journey has been a blend of hands-on experimentation, formal education, practical studio experience, and freelancing, all of which have contributed to my development as an audio engineer.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: I would describe my style as dynamic and balanced, with a focus on achieving a powerful low end, a clear and bright top end, and a well-defined midrange. In my mixes, I emphasize a strong low end to ensure that bass and kick drums are impactful and well-defined, providing a solid foundation that drives the track forward. This attention to the low frequencies ensures that the music has the energy and presence needed to captivate listeners. Equally important is the midrange, where most of the musical details and vocals reside. I work to ensure that the midrange is both clear and present, allowing vocals, melodies, and key instruments to be distinct and engaging. This balance helps the mix feel cohesive and ensures that every element has its own space. On the high end, I focus on maintaining a bright and open sound, ensuring that high-frequency elements like cymbals and melodic details are crisp and well-articulated. This combination of a robust low end, a defined midrange, and a sparkling top end results in a mix that is rich, balanced, and professionally polished. Overall, my style is about creating a mix that has depth, clarity, and vibrancy, allowing each element to shine while maintaining a cohesive and engaging sound.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: If I had the opportunity to work with an artist, it would be David Guetta. His music has had a profound impact on the global electronic dance music scene and has resonated with audiences worldwide. David Guetta is known for his innovative production techniques and ability to blend various genres, creating tracks that are both catchy and influential. His knack for crafting anthems that dominate charts and dance floors speaks to his exceptional skill and vision as a producer. Collaborating with him would be an incredible experience because it would offer a chance to delve into the creative processes behind some of the most iconic EDM tracks. It would also be an opportunity to learn from someone who has consistently pushed the boundaries of music production and continues to shape the industry’s sound. Overall, working with David Guetta would not only be an honor but also an inspiring chance to contribute to music that has such a significant global impact.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: One crucial music production tip I’d share is to trust your ears over your eyes. While visual tools like waveforms and meters are helpful, they can sometimes be misleading. What truly matters is how the music sounds in different contexts. When mixing or mastering, always rely on your listening experience to guide your decisions. Make sure to frequently listen to your work on various playback systems—studio monitors, headphones, and even in different environments like your car or living room. This approach helps you gauge how your mix translates across different systems and ensures that your decisions are based on how the music actually sounds, rather than what visual representations might suggest. Additionally, take breaks and return to your mix with fresh ears. Our perception can change over time, and what sounded great earlier might need adjustments after a short pause. By prioritizing your auditory perception, you'll achieve a more balanced and polished final product.

  29. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  30. A: When I work on a song, I focus on enhancing several key elements to elevate its overall quality. Firstly, I aim to bring clarity to each track, ensuring that every instrument and vocal is well-defined and sits perfectly in the mix. This involves careful equalization and balancing to highlight the important elements and remove any unnecessary clutter. Secondly, I strive to add impact to the song, making sure it has the emotional and sonic punch that grabs the listener’s attention. This is achieved through dynamic processing, thoughtful arrangement of effects, and careful attention to the energy and drive of the track. Finally, I work on loudness to ensure the song meets industry standards and sounds powerful across all playback systems. This involves mastering the track to achieve the right level of loudness while maintaining dynamic range and preventing distortion. In essence, I aim to bring out the best in a song by enhancing its clarity, impact, and loudness, ultimately delivering a polished and engaging final product that resonates with listeners.

  31. Q: What's your typical work process?

  32. A: My typical work process begins with importing all the tracks into a session and setting up the initial session parameters. The first step is to carefully listen to each track individually to get a sense of the overall sound and identify any immediate issues or adjustments needed. Once I have a clear understanding of the material, I start by making initial adjustments to levels, panning, and basic EQ to ensure that each element sits well in the mix. This involves balancing the tracks to create a preliminary mix and making notes on areas that might need further refinement. Next, I focus on more detailed adjustments, such as fine-tuning EQ, applying dynamics processing, and adding effects where necessary. Throughout this stage, I continually reference the mix on different playback systems to ensure it translates well across various listening environments. As the mix starts to take shape, I move on to the mastering phase, where I apply final touches such as equalization, compression, and limiting to enhance the overall sound and ensure it meets industry standards. This involves careful listening and adjustments to achieve a polished, cohesive final product. Throughout the entire process, I maintain open communication with the client to ensure that their vision is being realized and make any necessary revisions based on their feedback.

  33. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  34. A: I draw inspiration from several renowned music professionals who have made significant contributions to the industry. Tony Maserati, for instance, is a major influence with his exceptional skill in creating rich, dynamic mixes that maintain clarity and impact. His work across a diverse range of genres showcases the art of blending technical precision with creative intuition. Andrew Scheps is another key figure who inspires me. His approach to mixing, particularly his emphasis on achieving a raw and energetic sound, resonates deeply with my own philosophy. His ability to push the boundaries of traditional mixing techniques while maintaining the emotional integrity of the music is truly admirable. Luca Pretolesi also stands out for his expertise in both mixing and mastering. His innovative techniques and dedication to achieving high-quality, polished results are impressive and have influenced my own approach to the craft. Lastly, Jaycen Joshua's work is a constant source of inspiration. His mastery in creating vibrant, engaging mixes that translate well across different platforms speaks to his deep understanding of both the artistic and technical aspects of audio engineering. Each of these professionals brings a unique perspective to music production, and their work continually motivates me to refine my skills and explore new creative possibilities.

  35. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  36. A: As a mixing and mastering engineer, my primary focus is on refining and enhancing the audio tracks to achieve the best possible sound quality. For mixing, I work with clients to balance various elements of a track, such as vocals, instruments, and effects, ensuring that each component is clear and contributes effectively to the overall sound. This involves adjusting levels, panning, equalization, and applying effects to create a cohesive and polished mix. Once the mix is finalized, I move on to mastering, which is the final stage of audio production. Here, my goal is to ensure that the track sounds its best across all playback systems, from high-end speakers to earbuds. This involves equalization, compression, and other processing techniques to enhance the overall sound, ensure consistency, and prepare the track for distribution. In essence, my work is about bringing out the best in each recording, creating a polished final product that meets the artistic vision of the client while ensuring technical excellence.

  37. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  38. A: My promise to my clients is to deliver exceptional quality and value with every project. This means providing you with a polished, professional sound that enhances your music and meets your artistic vision. I commit to applying my expertise and attention to detail to ensure that each mix and master is crafted to the highest standards. I aim to create a final product that not only sounds great but also translates well across different listening environments and formats. In addition to quality, I prioritize clear communication and timely delivery. I will work closely with you to understand your needs and preferences, and I’m dedicated to making the revision process smooth and collaborative to achieve the best possible result. Ultimately, my goal is to offer top-notch audio services at a fair and competitive price, ensuring that you receive excellent value for your investment. Your satisfaction and the success of your project are at the heart of what I do.

  39. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  40. A: I typically work on a diverse range of genres, with a primary focus on EDM and pop music. For EDM, I handle everything from energetic dance tracks to atmospheric chill-out tunes. This genre requires a keen ear for dynamic builds, punchy drops, and intricate sound design, all of which I excel in. My approach is to ensure that every element—whether it's a deep bass, a soaring synth, or a driving beat—contributes to the track's overall energy and impact. In pop music, I work on crafting polished, radio-ready tracks that highlight catchy melodies and strong vocals. Pop production demands a balance between modern sound design and classic songwriting elements, and I strive to create mixes that are both vibrant and emotionally engaging. While EDM and pop are my primary focus, I also enjoy working on other genres as they offer new challenges and opportunities for creative exploration. Each project is an opportunity to bring out the best in the music and deliver a final product that resonates with its intended audience.

  41. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  42. A: I would say my strongest skill is my expertise in mixing and mastering EDM. EDM production requires a unique blend of technical precision and creative flair, and I excel in both aspects. In mixing EDM, I focus on achieving a balanced and impactful sound, where every element, from powerful bass lines to crisp high hats, is clear and well-defined. I’m adept at creating a dynamic range that allows the track to build and release energy effectively, ensuring it maintains its excitement and drive throughout. When it comes to mastering, I bring a deep understanding of the genre’s specific loudness and tonal requirements. My goal is to enhance the track’s overall impact while preserving its energy and ensuring it translates well across various playback systems. Overall, my proficiency in these areas allows me to create polished, professional-sounding tracks that capture the essence of EDM and resonate with listeners in the club or through streaming platforms.

  43. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  44. A: My studio setup is meticulously crafted to ensure high precision and versatility for both mixing and mastering.
