Interview with South Point Sound

Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Although we firmly think that's "Ear > Gear" our setup is quite simple: we have an isolated booth with a Neumann u-87 where clients can lay vocals, guitars or any sound that needs to be recorded; then we got the control room where we do all the production and post process. It's equipped with a UA Apollo x16 interface, a NI Komplete Kontrol S61 MK2 keyboard and some analog outboards like 500 series SSL preamps, channel-strip Eqs, and a couple g-series SSL master/bus compressors.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Hybrid: you can never go wrong with that, analog clearly delivers a sound full of life hardly replicable, but digital technologies have given us a boost into workflow and infinite possibilities that now is hard thinking to live without.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The challenging side: every day we like to improve ourselves to make our people happy.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Probably only a computer, a pair of monitors, headphones, a midi keyboard and a microphone.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Sometimes we just get stuck by all these screens, accurate quantizations, and precise meters and forget one thing, probably the most important one: listen.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Patience
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: First of all we make sure to learn and feel the client starting idea, then we put thoughts to work.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Basically we were amazed by FKJ and his very creative approach, but we also appreciate composers like Ryūichi Sakamoto or Herbie Hancock. We also get inspired by many urban artists like Meek Mill, Frank Ocean, Jhené Aiko or Don Toliver.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: We are used to work in recording sessions with singers and vocalists, but also producing instrumentals and beats for clients is very common in our daily job. On off-booking hours we dedicate our effort on closing mixes and masters, or editing VoiceOvers for podcast and audiobooks.
