Interview with PRVLG Studios

  1. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  2. A: There's a bunch of great Engineers,Musicians, and talented people in general on here. I don't want to single out some and not others. I will say, give everyone a chance.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: To keep it short, Both! ….But analog.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: We will not stop working until you're satisfied with our work! Re-mixing,Re- mastering a track, redoing production, etc. Whatever it takes. We charge the cost of running the studio and paying bills, but we put heart into everything we work on. Every project is like our own.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: Working with people from all around the world! The fact that our cultures or lifestyles may be worlds apart, but music can bring us 100% together is amazing!

  9. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  10. A: That anyone can do it. All of our engineers have been doing this for at least 9 years. there are certain things you can only learn with time and experience. I'm glad your friend down the street has Pro Tools, and Mbox and some cracked plugins...but, You'll hear the difference skill makes. I'm not even going to get started on equipment.

  11. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  12. A: 1.Macbook Pro 2.Pro Tools Omni HD 3.U87 (with pre) 4.Maschine 5.Random Midi Controller

  13. Q: How would you describe your style?

  14. A: Modern Clean Mixing,Analog Recording,Production with low end,Analog warmth and distortion.

  15. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  16. A: Honestly, we'll work with anyone who's serious and has the drive to accomplish something with their music. Even if it's just a personal goal. There are many projects we take on for free out of love for the music.

  17. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  18. A: Learn how to use an 808 properly!

  19. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  20. A: Our Clients are a lot like a pot of gumbo lol, meaning a little bit of everything. The projects we work on range from Rock, Pop, EDM, Hip Hop, to Metal, House, even Jazz. Obviously we have a different approach for each different genre of music, but we treat each with the same skill, attention, and care.

  21. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  22. A: Our Ears! I try to bring that "Polish" so to speak to a track, while not losing the original vibe for the song or project that made the artist fall in love with it in the first place. A good set of ears will get your project done timely manor, as well as only addressing what needs to be done and can improve the sound.

  23. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  24. A: I believe our Engineers, whether Tracking,Mixing, or Mastering bring a certain glue to the music we work on. The Missing Piece to the puzzle that brings everything together, and helps the music flow.

  25. Q: What's your typical work process?

  26. A: Our process varies from project to project. Usually we try to connect with artist/producer/band and get a full understanding of their vision for the finished project. We address the main concerns or questions, and take things from there.

  27. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  28. A: At PRVLG, We have a basic 3 room setup, 1 dedicated to Mastering and just that. We have a B room for minor Recording,Production and Rough Mixing, and an A room for Tracking and Mixing the bigger projects. A perfect example of everything we have to offer would be the B Room. It features a full on Pro Tools HD Rig,a C|24 control board, Connected to a an Avalon 737,DBX106,and APi 550, and a SSL Duende. We also have a mustang 4 amp for tracking guitars. We have a TLM 103 Mic for recording, but also have a u87 available. For production we have Maschine 2,and a MPC REN. We have a few Midi controllers by Akai and M-audio, as well as a Roland Fantom. On the digital side of things we also have more than enough of High quality Plugins!

  29. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  30. A: From an engineer standpoint, i'd have to say a mix of the greats like a Jimmy Douglas,Chris Lord Algie,Ken Lewis,Mike Dean, etc.. From the production side of things, It's more so certain songs and the actual sounds in them. As opposed one particular artist or producer.

  31. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  32. A: Usually we get projects (EP's,LP's, or demos) that need the Basics Editing and Mixing. Occasionally Mastering too, and we do that all in house.

  • Regarding The "30 Second Sample" of our workJun 04, 2014

Regarding doing a 30-45 second sample of our work, whether mixing or mastering...Our answer to that is...sometimes. On SoundBetter, We notice more and more clients are askingus to do samples of our work so they can see how it would sound, or what we can do for their sound. This is fine, Most of the time we're more than willing to do so. The problem is, Even tho you're just getting a sample, we actually Mix the full song! Just as we would if you were paying. We put in the same amount of work, and the same amount of time. In the process, this gets quite costly when doing it for every client, We run the studio, higher assistant engineers, etc..and we make nothing while doing so. We also miss out on potential clients who are trying to get full work done.To keep it short, occasionally, when asked to do a sample of our work..we might say no.Not to be rude,We care about everyones music and treat it as our own. We'd also love to work with you all! but,This is the reason why.
