Mitchell Hammen on SoundBetter

Mitchell Hammen is a multi-talented mix engineer, producer and composer from Appleton, Wisconsin. A true master of sound, Mitchell has built a reputation amongst his peers for being the glue that helps bring all the elements of a song together. Best known for his multi-dimensional mixes of R&B and hip-hop.

A great mix is the most crucial part of a great record and choosing an engineer you can trust to carry out the artistic vision of your track is just as important.

I work with all kinds of budgets and time restrictions efficiently to create a high quality/professional sounding project.

Quickly get your music mixed and sent back within days. Other features may come at a small fee. I use professional studio equipment along with the signature Steven Slate Digital, Universal Audio, and Waves plugins for mixing and drum triggering. I've been a producer for 6 years (rap, hip hop, indie/folk, rock, etc).

What you'll need:

1. Send a .zip with all of the stems (kick, snare, guitar, vocals...) in .WAV or .AIFF formate without any processing
2. Give a brief description of what you want the mix to sound like (artists, bands, inspirations, etc)

Mitchell completed my project and just a few days and I was more than satisfied with his work. He really took my mixes and gave them that extra bit of detail and really made them shine. Will definitely be working with him in the future. Good prices and amazing work!!!

Mitchell is a true professional. He is very patient, and knowledgeable in the music field. Easily one of the best engineers I've worked with on here. He took an already completed version of a track and turned it into something even more amazing with his rendition. Don't even hesitate to use his services!

I appreciate that he took the time to really get my song to where it needed to be clarity-wise. We did what with could under a time-sensitive release. Great work!

Great Service. Never been happier with mixes and there’s really no reason to go anywhere else. Mitchell is knowledgable, talented and always willing to make changes if necessary. Simply transformed my song into the vision I wanted.

Interview with Mitchell Hammen

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One project that I worked on this past summer was an EP called "Postpure" by my friend Chan's Night Out. I was the mixing and mastering engineer as well as the executive producer of the album.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Analog all the way. Digital stuff is getting better and better each year but as of right now, nothing sounds better than a mix running through a desk and outboard master bus compressors/EQ's.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: I promise to treat your song the same as I would treat my own. As an artist myself, I know how important it is to have an engineer you can trust to being the best out of every song you make.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: My favorite part of mixing is comparing the final mix to the original one I was sent. Helping artist achieve the exact vision they had for a song is an incredible feeling.

  9. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  10. A: A lot of customers ask what kind of gear or plugins I am using when mixing their song. I am always open to telling artists exactly what I am doing and love going back and forth with them.

  11. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  12. A: The biggest misconception about sound engineering is that every song is mixed the same way. Each and every song is unique and requires a unique mix to really bring the best out of it.

  13. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  14. A: First I ask how close you want the fine mix to be to the rough mix. A lot of people just a want a cleaner version of their rough mix that they fell in love with. After that I ask about any inspirations or artists that you would want your record to sound similar to and then follow up with the best way to achieve that.

  15. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  16. A: I am very patient and will never rush a project. I love the collaborative process of mixing while also adding my own touch/secret sauce to every mix.

  17. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  18. A: 1. Neumann TLM103 Microphone 2. Fender Telecaster 3. Apollo x8 Audio Interface 4. ADAM Audio A77X Monitors 5. SSL Fusion Mastering Processor

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: I have been a musician/producer for 15 years now but went to college for Audio Engineering. I have been a full-time Mix Engineer for 3 years now.

  21. Q: How would you describe your style?

  22. A: I would describe my style as hard hitting. Loud drums and bass while maintaining clarity in the mix as a whole.

  23. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  24. A: One artist I would love to work with is Kanye West because of the craziness and unorthodox way he creates his albums.

  25. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  26. A: One production tip I use a lot is soloing the vocal tracks and bass/808's of a song and the building everything from there. Especially in Hip-Hop, the lead vocal and the bass are the driving forces of the song and most of the other instruments are just filling in the spaces.

  27. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  28. A: I primarily work in the Hip-Hop/Rap field but also have experience in RnB, Rock, Blues, Indie, and Country.

  29. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  30. A: My strongest skill is my ability to Pitch Correct a vocal and get it to sit properly in a mix.

  31. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  32. A: I think I bring a certain creativity to each song I work on as I love to bounce ideas off the artist and create the exact vision they were looking for. Always love adding effects and other elements to glue a mix together.

  33. Q: What's your typical work process?

  34. A: Most projects begin in my home studio where I arrange, pitch correct, edit, and do some basic EQ work. After I clean up the stems I then work out of a recording studio/mix room for the more hands on mixing with an analog console and outboard gear at my disposal.

  35. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  36. A: I work at a professional recording studio (Rock Garden) but I also have a home studio setup where I do a lot of vocal production/editing and producing.

  37. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  38. A: I model my mixing techniques after Mike Dean and MixedbyAli. Two of the biggest and more influential Engineers of our lifetime. Most of the big Hip-Hop records you hard are mixed by one of the two.

  39. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  40. A: Mixing and Mastering is primarily what I do but I also have an extensive production background gives me a creative edge over other Engineers.
