Emil Carlsson on SoundBetter

I'm Emil, a Swedish songwriter, producer and multiinstrumentalist based in Stockholm. I am a versatile producer, having worked on projects from folk music, all the way to rap and modern pop. My versatility as a musician allows me to create music that is organic-sounding without missing the touch of all the great elements of modern music today.

I have a Bachelor's in Music Production from the Linnaeus University in southern Sweden. With countless hours of working/learning, helped by many great teachers in the industry, I refined the craft of music making and made an immense improvement on my mixing skills during that time.

In 2018, my last year of college, I landed an internship at a studio in New York City. There, I got the opportunity to collaborate with established producers and songwriters, leading me to work on projects with many different artists including Fat Joe.

I have become very good at analysing and adapting to each artist's wants and needs. With my experiences, I will make sure you get the best possible service, with an outcome that sounds like you.

Interview with Emil Carlsson

Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I would say my own debut album. I made everything myself. I wrote all the songs, I recorded and played all the instruments. I produced and mixed everything, too.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise I will do my absolute best to make you happy. Music is so fragile, like a heart. I will make sure I build the ribs and body around it with patience and accuracy to keep it as strong and intact as it could be.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: When producing, I like to just listen to the received song once or twice first, while writing down some notes that pop up in my head. After that, I would either try to create these things, or listen to a reference song I think could have the same sonics and elements. I would also ask the client for a reference song to make sure that I'm heading in the right direction. From there I usually blend these three approaches until I think the song starts to sound finished. Every project looks different though.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mostly do production at the moment.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a MacBook Pro and an iMac set up on a desk in my apartment. They are connected to my UAD Apollo Twin, with my Focal CSM65 speakers. I work completely in the box, but the UAD world makes it feel more analogue.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am greatly inspired by Ryan Adams, John Mayer, Jason Isbell, and Donovan Woods. They make music that really speaks to me, and are great lyricists.
