Interview with David Barnes

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Have recently released a Charity Single for COVID-19 which has had many celebrity endorsements throughout the UK music industry. A very powerful project that has reached millions of people and in all honest has touched everyone who has listened, simply because this is something we have all been involved with.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am currently working on an EP Release, working with some of Americas top songwriters.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Not that I have seen so far.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both. This is an ever fast moving industry and we all must realise that music comes in many forms. We must be open for both here.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I will deliver the standard and sound you want. If you are not happy, we will go again until you are. I will never walk away until everything is set and settled.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Freedom and being able to do a hobby as your job.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: How much do you charge? Depends how big the project is!

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: People always say that we all must be rich! Well this is far from the truth and to make it in this industry to a level that makes you financially well off, is a very hard thing to do. Some of the worlds top musicians are not necessarily on the red carpet!

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Always look into the style that you want and pick carefully. Not everyone can deliver the exact sound you're looking for and this industry is crowded with many artists giving the same style and information. Ask people to send you a vocal demo OR check their profiles out on social media to see if they are credible.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: Notepad, Pen, IPod with lifelong battery!, happiness and inspiration.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I have had a 25 year career in the entertainment industry and have worked extensively to be able to deliver high quality vocals. I have worked with many top artists and sang in many of the worlds most prestigious venues.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: I have a very Po/Rock style with an 'Either Or' approach. Whether its a Rock Gravel you're after or a soft airy type boy band voice OR something in-between with a hard hitting crisp tone, the choice is yours.

  25. Q: What's your typical work process?

  26. A: Collect information of what the client wants and discuss in detail the exact styling and final delivery that's needed. Demo's can be sent during the process until the client is happy.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: James Bay simple because his songwriting capabilities and feel for the mood is incredible.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Never rush! Always experiment and find the sound you are looking for. Always trust your ears!

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Pop/Rock

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: The ability to make things unique

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring a different type of style that’s unique and sounds different from anything else.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: Full Logic Pro X set up. Home Studio.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: Real musicians inspire me! Simple.
