Maiku Tachibana on SoundBetter

Experienced Vocalist and Music producer with a dynamic vocal range and style that enjoys challenging projects and collaborating with other people! If you're looking for vocalist who can be expressive and controlled in their performance, look no further!

Hello! My name is Maiku and I have been singing for as long as I can remember, from hours in the karaoke booth to practicing 'screamo' in my family shed as a teenager!
I would describe my voice as soft and expressive, my most comfortable range being on the more effeminate side.
Much of my vocal inspiration growing up came from bands like Pierce the Veil and Sleeping with Sirens, so I've got a lot of experience with singing higher-than-average pitched vocals.
I can sing comfortably in English and Japanese, however I am willing to branch out and sing in other languages!

All my Vocal takes are recorded with either a Shure SM58, or an AT-2020, depending on what kind of song it is

As for Music Production, I'd say I have a keen inherent understanding of cohesion and harmony, as well as progression, and have recently been brancing out into pushing those boundaries out further with more abrasive sounds. I've been producing for 5 years, and my main 'genre' is Electronica/Experimental, however it's a very wide umbrella, honestly I only pay attention to genre when it's important to a client to match a certain style.

Maiku provided very accurate vocals and really pays attention to all the details. He provided the files in a very timely manner as well, since this song was high priority. I highly recommend!

Interview with Maiku Tachibana

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I'm proud of a song I recently produced called 'shithead'. It was made on a tight deadline and I made a special effort with the visual side of things, and it was gratifying to see something that felt more 'authentically' me resonate positively with the community.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Summoning the mental strength to finish this interview

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I'm not good at networking, so no xD

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital! Got no problem with 'Analog' in itself, but I do find those who shun digital for analog because of some sense of 'authenticity' to be a little irritating.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: That you'll get honest open communication about the project. And that I'll deliver my best efforts to you, I know how much projects can mean to people, and I honestly want to try my best to meet those expectations

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Getting lost in the 'flow-state' of a good work session, where you check the time and 6 hours have passed

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Most common question I get asked is "Can you do X", and my answer is almost always "Yes, I'll give it my best shot". Even if it's outside my wheelhouse (which I'd mention), I like pushing myself

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That 'Recording Vocals' isn't difficult. The singing part isn't too hard, but scouring through take after take to find the perfect one, and compiling them all together is taxing work that takes a while.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I ask about anything that's not been clearly stated, I usually ask about any deadline requirements to be able to manage my own schedule better, and will ask further questions regarding specifics of the project as they come up

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Ensure that the project is sufficiently prepped and thought out before you approach a provider. Knowing exactly what you want, and being able to succinctly list off what your needs and desires for a project are is a massive help to providers like us

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Ain't nobody working digitally with the glare of the sun on a desert island, so I'm taking an acoustic guitar and a harmonica, gives me something to learn. And I'll bring 3 more harmonicas and teach the crabs to harmonise with me

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started producing and writing music in High School, and have been singing for longer. I have only started approaching it with a more professional attitude since 2018, and since then have generally just followed my own goals and aspirations, such as releasing an album or hitting a certain number of streams/views

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Rougishly Authentic

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would love to collaborate with some Vocaloid artists like Kikuo or Mushi-P in the future, just being able to see their creative processes would be a blessing in itself!

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Don't overthink your production/composition, or get caught up in 'what will sound popular' or whether something matches your style. Just produce what you're feeling in that moment, and if it sounds good and is sincere, people will resonate with it

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: As a producer, I mainly work on Experimental genre-blending Electronica music using Vocaloid, and as a Vocalist I work on a wide blend of genres from hip-hop and pop, to rock and metal

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My ability to work under tight deadlines

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Vocally, I bring an expressive, experienced voice, and an ability to match/mimic the vocal styles of many artists. As a producer, I bring a unique blend of genre knowledge from my own personal tastes, and can easily create original chord progressions and melodic hooks. I am very open to feedback and like to stay in regular contact with clients to ensure the project is matching their expectations at all points

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I tend to work in bursts of high energy followed by some down-time. Often I will do the majority of the most important work in one sitting, then polish off and fine-tune other elements at another time, to give me more perspective on what I'm working on

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: Right now I either record in a sound treated booth or my apartment depending on which microphone I'm using, I use a powerful desktop PC to produce and compile on FL Studio. As a producer, I also have a MIDI keyboard that I use for creating new melodies and inputting more complex MIDI data for projects that require it

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I'm heavily inspired by the Japanese Vocaloid Producer "Kikuo", who has a DIY attitude of managing all aspects of their work themselves, and continually creating unique and unapologetically niche content!

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Recently the most common work I've done involves creating vocal covers for popular songs to be used by producers making remixes. It involves creating high-grade vocal stems that invoke the spirit of the original vocals, as well as matching the tone and mixing style of the reference
