I'm Joe Salcedo, a 24 year old session musician, MIDI Arranger, film scorer, and an aspiring mix engineer based in Manila, Philippines.

I am a self-taught musician, and my ears have been trained since I was little. I learned how to transcribe songs by ear, and eventually I developed perfect pitch. During my college years, I have worked with artists from the Metro as a session guitarist or bassist, both in-studio and live, and I also got introduced to film scoring, sound designing and sound engineering. After I graduated college, I joined a karaoke company which transcribes Japanese songs and convert them into MIDI format. I got to transcribe a lot of Jpop, Jrock songs, and sequenced and arranged them according to Japanese standards.

I am also a Mix Engineer, and I recently mixed Submission's recent single "City Lights" (https://open.spotify.com/track/2M8c9YmqlBdiUbZPGiZxIc?si=J3EHsSa-TBCdwEmKen9ALw), and I have mixed some of my band's live performances (https://youtu.be/vBtFFhHBTmw)

I have been continuously playing for other artists, live or in-studio, producing, arranging, and sound engineering. I also do musical scoring for thesis films, short films, and advertisements. Last but not the least, I am very proficient in the MIDI language.

I hope to work with you soon. Professionalism and bliss is guaranteed!

Peace!

Interview with Joe Salcedo

  1. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  2. A: I always wanted to be a musician/producer ever since I heard "Get Back" by The Beatles. Although I earned a degree in Marketing, I focused a lot practicing my chops, listened to a lot of songs over and over again so I can "internalize" the work, and I learned a lot from my friends in the music scene. I have been doing all my musical efforts since 2006 or 2007.

  3. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  4. A: Me and my friend have a studio, and we have a pair of M-Audio BX5As, a Focusrite Saffire Pro 24 DSP, An AKG P220 condenser mic, and 2 pairs of Sony MDRs. We use Ableton Live 10. As of October 2020, I have acquired a Solid State Logic SSL2 audio interface and 1 pair of M-Audio AV40, a Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro Studio Headphones, and a Shure SM57 Dynamic Microphone.

  5. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  6. A: Mostly Funk or Soul, and also Indie Rock.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I like them both. Analog because in a way, it's tangible and analog equipment teaches you the foundation. Digital because it is more efficient, and it is smart.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: The flexible hours.

  11. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  12. A: That there's no future in this industry. I say that it trains the brain to be more creative, to be resourceful, and to be more natural.

  13. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  14. A: Laptop, a basic Focusrite interface, SM7B, a Fender Strat, and a clean tube amp.

  15. Q: How would you describe your style?

  16. A: I'm a flexible person. I adjust accordingly to the client's needs, but at the same time I also suggest what might and what might not work in a project.

  17. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  18. A: I'd like to work/play for PREP one day.

  19. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  20. A: Serve the song, not your ego.

  21. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  22. A: Guitar and Bass. It's my main squeeze, my bread and butter. Been playing guitar/bass for 13 years now.

  23. Q: What's your typical work process?

  24. A: Usually, I ask the client/s their vision, pegs, the result that they want, and then we (me and the client) work around the vision. Collaboration is very important.

  25. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  26. A: I'm heavily inspired by Death Cab for Cutie's material atm, and also PREP's production. Also a big fan of Kevin Parker.

  27. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  28. A: Pre-production (arrangement), recording, and post-production (mixing).
