Interview with Gabriel Guirao

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: Besides from working for artists I'm currently producing my second album, being in charge from writing and recording to mixing and mastering.

  3. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  4. A: Silke for vocals, Zhiv Shalev for guitars!

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: As a child born in the digital world, I'd be disingenuous if I said my approach to audio is mainly analog. A good work ethic should be a blend of both worlds. While working with digital tools I often use recreations of analog legends.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: We are not done until we both are proud of the results.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: Beyond the harshness of the industry... It's just super fun. I love hearing new stuff everyday and meeting creative and awesome people.

  11. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  12. A: This is a multistep work. We will be dancing between revisions, and that's for the better. The more information and feedback you give me, the better I will achieve your idea.

  13. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  14. A: Feel free to give me a lot of information and references, the more the better. Send me a reference song that you want to sound like, that is key.

  15. Q: How would you describe your style?

  16. A: Warm. I try to make your ears and brain feel comfortable.

  17. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  18. A: I would love to work and have a minute peak of a Röyksopp project.

  19. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  20. A: Watch that bass. Don't overpush your levels during mixing. The process of mastering will show you how many things you did wrong in the mix :).

  21. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  22. A: I love working with pop and electronic, but genre is not an issue!

  23. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  24. A: I hear and analyze your music from different fields and perspectives. I consider myself a great problem detector and solver.

  25. Q: What's your typical work process?

  26. A: After you send me your ideas, reference track and audio stems I start (if there's no editing needed) with a rough mix, that being volume levels and panning. After that I attack frequency and dynamic issues. Then the magic and fun begins... I usually send a fake master upon finishing the mix, so you have a better idea of what could be the a final product. As with mixing, for mastering each song is a world. Some approaches: I start with small EQs, multiband compression, more EQ... More compression... Parallel compression, saturation... Working the stereo image, pushing the RMS and peaks... Did I mention more EQ?

  27. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  28. A: I tend to mix in the box: Cubase / Pro Tools with Presonus Faderport 16 as a controller. A great collection of plugins that I managed to amass along the years (particularly enjoying SSL's and UA's official remakes of their analog hardware). Yamaha HS 7 studio monitors. I also gathered an interesting collection of analog and digital synthesizers.

  29. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  30. A: Fab Dupont, Sylvia Massy, Joe Barresi, Tchad Blake...

  31. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  32. A: Mixing and Mastering. I also edit audio, tipically vocals (time and pitch adjustments with Melodyne) and percussion. If the projects needs it I also contribute as a composer and producer.
