Interview with Antonio Monteiro

  1. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  2. A: Have you ever mixed my style of music? I allways say the truth, and if I haven't worked in the genre before, I can always use refference songs and ask some colegues that can point me in the right direction and/or assist me in achieving my clients goals. So far there have been no complaints.

  3. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  4. A: That everything can be fixed with mixing. There's a lot that can be done, but the closer you get to your musical goal in the recording process, the better the mix will sound.

  5. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  6. A: What Genre of music are you working on? What is the instrumentation and track count? Do you have any reference mixes of your song(s) or reference tracks by other artists that you're looking to emulate?

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: I started producing electronic music when I was 16, which eventually led me to get a degree in music production and audio engineering. While studying I started recording some friends bands and doing live sound gigs, I slowly built my own studio over the years, and here I am today doing what I love for almost 16 years now.

  9. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  10. A: Don't be afraid of experimenting with your instruments/gear. If there's anything I've learned over the years is that investing your time in experimenting with new things will eventually lead you to create a more unique musical personality. Don't' be afraid of sounding weird, weird is often good.

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: Over the years I've worked with most musical genres. Mainly Rock, Heavy-Rock, and Pop-Rock, Hip-hop, and Pop.

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: Comunication. Listening and understanding what each client whants. I strongly believe that more than my technical skills, this is what makes my clients happy with my work.

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: My technical skills and music knowledge, but most importantly I always step into each project with an open mind and a lot of respect for the artists and their music.

  17. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  18. A: My studio is an hybrid setup built around a Antelope Orion 32+ interface, and using Pro Tools and Reaper as main DAWs. Using a hybrid setup allows me to use plugins for convinience, and outboard analog gear when I need that extra analog warmth. Plugins include: Waves, Universal Audio, Sound Toys, Brainworx, and a lot more. Analog gear includes: Serpent Audio SB4001 SSL style compressor, Drawmer 1978, Audioscape D-Comp Neve style compressor, JLM LA 500, DIY LA-2A clone, and much more. Monitoring: Neumann KH 310 and Auratones.

  19. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  20. A: Both. Because both have their advantages. Despite all the developments in the digital tools we have, using some analog gear will have a more desirable "footprint" on the sound. But digital makes everything way more simple and less expensive. So I use some analog compressors and equalizers both for recording and mixing, but I also use a lot of plugins.

  21. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  22. A: Ask questions and try to understand if this person is a good fit for you and your music before you commit. Make sure you're hiring someone who will respect you and your work.
