Interview with KENZI

  1. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  2. A: Russ - I feel like he's unstoppable in the studio. James Blake - he's elegant with his work. Otis Redding.

  3. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  4. A: I had a folk-rock band for 5 years & did plenty of sing-songwriter work, but also love hip-hop and electronic work. I'm all over from John Prine to Kendrick & James Blake. I just love music with passion & feeling.

  5. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  6. A: I specialize in adding emotion. I feel my voice has unique character that allows people to connect more deeply to a song.

  7. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  8. A: Logic Pro X with an SM7B and Apollo Twin.

  9. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  10. A: I am great at adding in a chorus, but also incredible at ambient vocal layers if you just needs some vibes without words.

  11. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  12. A: I'm producing constantly for my own music, but I really want to branch out to creating music for films - I love film so much & it would be a major accomplishment to be part of one.

  13. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  14. A: Austin Leeds. Dude is so affordable, polite and will get your work done the fastest. Plus he isn't afraid the alter your mix & show you what instruments should shine.

  15. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  16. A: Just express as fully as possible what you're looking for. I have to fully understand your vision in order to bring my piece.

  17. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  18. A: Laptop, midi keyboard, guitar & enough to record vocals. I could live forever off that.

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: My dream has just been to keep making music my life since I was 16. After years of performing I had to take a break & find myself in music again, but now I'm more active than ever.

  21. Q: How would you describe your style?

  22. A: It's like... soulful folk with a slight country twang?

  23. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  24. A: Always let it rest for a day - even when you're the most hyped you can wake up in the morning and immediately know what needs to be correct. I always give a rest day after I feel a track is done.

  25. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  26. A: Adding emotion & being great to work with.

  27. Q: What's your typical work process?

  28. A: Typically I'll ask more about what you're looking for, i.e. what energy, what's the purpose and feeling of the project - I want to pin down the emotion first. Next I'll start workshopping melodies until I feel I have a good hook. Then it's adding on harmonies & making sure the track catches ears.

  29. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  30. A: Andrew Bird, Otis Redding, Russ, James Blake - anyone who completely dives into their craft.
