Interview with Sean Tallman

  1. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  2. A: To listen and respect my clients requests. I don't know everything. But with that said I'll pull my clients off the cliff if I think they are making choices that could hurt the project.

  3. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  4. A: How would you like this song or album to feel?

  5. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  6. A: A sat-phone. Lol

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both. Technology has always dictated how people record and mix music. I try to take the old and the new and make whatever I'm working on better.

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: I've been engineering and mixing professionally for the last 18 years.

  11. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  12. A: I try to bring clarity and feeling to whatever I'm working on. I always ask myself with every song I work on, "How can I make this better."

  13. Q: What's your typical work process?

  14. A: I usually try and have a conversation with the artist/band and get an idea of their vision for the project. This could be talking about music they love, how they were feeling when they wrote the song, how they want other people to feel when they hear their music, etc... (these conversations can get deep). Once I feel I have a good understanding of everything I'll start listening to the rough mix and get a feel for the song. From there its about getting your hands dirty to make the music convey those emotions. I can talk tech all day. But in the end this is what music does for me and this is why my clients come to me. The music has to feel great.

  15. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  16. A: I love music!! And I love making things sound amazing!!

  17. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  18. A: Pop, RnB, Hip Hop, Rock, EDM, House, Reggae... I've done a bit of everything

  19. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  20. A: My ability to communicate to the artist/band/producer and help them realize their vision.

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: I'm currently mixing out of my own mix room in Los Angeles. I'm running a hybrid setup with Pro Tools and my collection of outboard gear. I also have a pretty nice collection of mics and instruments.

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: I'm such a huge fan of so many people. I understand what goes into making a great record. From the initial spark of the song writer to taking the record to mastering. At heart I'm just a big fan.

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: These days I'm mostly mixing. But I still do some recording and production for my clients from time to time.
