Interview with Oli Harper
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: I'm often asked how to get a clean, professional, sounding mix and the truth is it's not just one thing, it's many things added together that take experience and practice to perfect.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been producing music for 12 years and have a degree in Music Production from Leeds Conservatoire. I've been working as a professional Music Producer for 5 years.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Lots of different genres but most common is probably Piano House.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: If I'm making a track from scratch I come up with the chords, structure and initial melodies of the track first before going into detail with all the parts and finally mixing and mastering.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Ghost production, mixing & mastering.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Singer/songwriters - Lachi, Mickey, Krysta Youngs, Natalie M, Alisa Fedele
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both, they complement each other. Analogue brings warmth and depth but digital is fast, precise and reliable. They work perfectly together.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: To deliver on time and to a high standard.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love making great music which people enjoy.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That producing professional music is easy and doesn't take years of experience!
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: For me, reference tracks are really important as they help me understand what the client is hoping to achieve.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Skill is the most important thing. Listen to their music and make sure that they're right for your project.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: 1) iMac with software and plugins 2) Monitors and subwoofer 3) Apollo Twin Interface 4) Piano 5) Fender Stratocaster
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Feel good House music.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Nile Rodgers because he has had a long-lasting career in music and still to this day manages to stay relevant. He has a great ear for commercial music.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: The best piece of advice I would give is to decide if an idea is worth finishing early on and, if so, always make sure you see it through to the end.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I think my strongest skill is my knowledge of music theory.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Musicality and a professional sound.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a full acoustically treated studio. My equipment includes an iMac with 64Gb RAM, Logic Pro X, Adams A7X monitors, Adams Subwoofer, UAD Apollo Twin mk2, Clavinova Electric Piano, Fender Stratocaster guitar, Korg ms-20, Beyer Dynamics DT770 Pro headphones, hundreds of plugins including Waves, Fabfilter, UAD, Soundtoys, Slate Digital, Isotope, Native Instruments, etc),
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
