Interview with Perry Leenhouts

  1. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  2. A: Recording, Mixing, mastering.

  3. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  4. A: Poppy punk stuff, heavy rock 'n roll, metal.

  5. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  6. A: Find out how you can make all the tracks work together, not how well they sound in solo mode!

  7. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  8. A: I mix 95% in the box. Once in a while I'll use some outboard gear if I'm going for a specific effect or treatment, but I love the flexibility and freedom that working in the box provides. I work in Pro Tools. My main monitors are Genelec 8040b's, setup in a well treated room.

  9. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  10. A: There's a place for both. I'm a fan of recording through analog gear, and mixing in the digital domain.

  11. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  12. A: What are you trying to achieve with this album, creatively speaking?

  13. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  14. A: Articulate your goals and expectations. It's important we're on the same page, that way I can help you reach your potential.

  15. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  16. A: Like many producers and mixing engineers, I started out as a musician. First as a drummer, then as the lead singer for the surfpunk band The Travoltas. After a few album releases, I started producing and mixing records for other bands.

  17. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  18. A: Creating a clear, open, and detailed mix.

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: My ears, and my conviction a song has to invoke an emotional response. A song needs to be able to tell a story, through melody, rhythm, and words. My goal is to bolster the elements in a song that people will remember.

  21. Q: What's your typical work process?

  22. A: If the project needs editing, I'll start with that. Then it's setting up the routing, so by the time I get to mixing I can focus 100% on the creative aspect of the job. I create a quick raw mix so I can listen through the whole song, and go from there.
