Interview with Ben Gaffey

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I am currently working on my own self-produced tape on which I currently have 2 songs out and one music video. I am releasing the rest of the tape in late 2018 and am incredibly proud of how it's going.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: FL Studio

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Either one because I fricken love every way of expressing yourself through music.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: I am not a "producer", I'm a producer. You will receive a professional sounding product that will blow away anyone who listens to your track.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: Being able to do what I love and make other people happy and get paid for it.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: How long will it takes me to finish a song completely? Usually anywhere between 2-7 days depending on your goals for the song.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: People think because the music is made on a computer that it's just a push of a button. Actually producing music involves years and years of training in music technology, theory, composition, etc. I have spent years increasing my knowledge of music and training my ear in order to create the exact sound I am looking for.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: What are your goals for the song we're working on?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Always be vocal about what you want. I may be making it, but YOU'RE paying ME to make YOUR song, so don't be afraid to tell me exactly what you want until I make it. But be respectful, I will always work with you with full respect and positivity as long as you are willing to do the same.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: Laptop with FL Studio and some headphones plugged in, midi keyboard, electric guitar, microphone and interface.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: My end goal is to have my own studio in LA or Boston and have regular, well-known clients. I want to be a well-known producer and artist within the music industry. I have been doing this for about 5 years and have so far made it farther than I ever saw myself making it, even though it's just a little progress at a time.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: Trippy. I go between soft and hard music all the time, but always try to retain my own little hint of psychedelic influence.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: Mac Miller RIP BEAUTIFUL MIND but Frank Ocean just to be able to put my own twist on his raw emotion and sound.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Compression!!!!!!!!!!!!

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: I usually work on hip-hop and contemporary R&B. Sometimes I make EDM, chill-hop, or lofi music. Basically any sub-genre of rap or hip-hop.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: My strongest skill is production, which includes musical theory, composition, recording, making the song, etc.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: A professional sounding mix, master, and a high-quality production. My beats and instrumentals are made with high-quality instruments and samples. I have incredible equipment that will deliver a fantastic sound, and years of training in order to produce a professional sounding final product qualified for streaming services.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: My work process consists of gathering inspiration, sitting at the computer and creating a beat. I usually spend around a week on my beats to make sure they are perfect and incorporate enough musical and production elements to stand out from everyone. If I am working directly with the client, I will have them record until they are satisfied with their own performance and I will spend time mixing their vocals with them to achieve their preferred sound. After mixing, I pop in my headphones and master the song. This takes anywhere from a few hours to a few days.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: My setup consists of a laptop and computer monitor, 2 studio monitors, an 89 key midi keyboard, 2 electric guitars, 2 acoustic guitars, 1 electric bass, 1 scarlet audio condenser microphone with an audio interface.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: I have always drawn heavy inspiration from Mac Miller, Frank Ocean, and Chance The Rapper. Recently I have been producing heavier rap beats, sounding similar to artists such as Migos, XXXTentacion, Ski Mask the Slump God, etc.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: The most common type of work I do with clients is beat production and audio engineering. I generally sit with the client and make an instrumental start to finish or work on it at home for at least a week. I am usually the main audio engineer that my clients use, so I will be responsible for recording and mixing the vocals. I also master any song I produce, so by the end of the process I will have created a beat or instrumental for you, recorded you, and mixed and mastered your song to a professional standard.
