VLM on SoundBetter

Multi-Platinum Mastering. Credits include Kyle, Kehlani, Lil Yachty, Anderson .Paak, Snoop Dogg, Mos Def, Aloe Blacc, Lil Uzi Vert, Kodak Black, J Dilla, Blu & Exile, Dam Funk, Tokimonsta and many more.

VLM / Violet Lantern Mastering is operated by multi-platinum (7x w/ RIAA) mastering engineer Wes Osborne, who started mastering for independent tastemaker labels like Stones Throw Records and has since been heard and hired by industry giants like Atlantic.

His experience with different genres is broad, and his work ethic is second-to-none.

The current rate for mastering through our website is 150 / song for major labels and 100 for indy labels, but we offered 45% off for the first 100 new clients through SoundBetter.

This has now been achieved but we have decided to extend this offer for a limited time, due to all of the amazing artists we have had the pleasure of working with here on SoundBetter.

Each master also includes 3 rounds of revisions, and a PMCD or DDP is included on full-length albums, upon request.

If you have any questions, feel free to message us!!

Wes is an absolute wizard at his craft. He took my mix to the next level and gave it that exact life I was looking for. While his mastering skills are second to none, even more impressive was his communication and attention to detail throughout the entire process. You can tell he really cares about his craft and delivering a high-standard of quality service to his clients. I'll definitely be working with Wes again for my future releases going forward. Thank you again my brother!

Wes is a true professional, delivering exceptional results with speed and precision. His communication skills are top-notch, ensuring that every aspect of my project was understood and executed flawlessly. Not only did he meet my expectations, but he exceeded them by mastering the tracks before the anticipated deadline. Wes is truly next level. I have worked with a handful of producers/engineers, but none as top-tier and reasonable for the value you receive as Wes. He is so fast with everything he does and so attentive to detail and what the client wants. I cannot recommend Wes more, and I wish I could put it into words how helpful and fantastic he has been with such a special project I have been working on. I truly don't want to work with anyone else. 10/10 - reach out to Wes and stick with him.

I’ve been back multiple times and will continue to always only come back to VLM. Always get what I need here, no need to even try anywhere else. Customer service is off the charts and the tracks are always 20x better than what I initially brought. Love working with VLM. 10 stars!!! I wish all music interactions were like this haha.

Wes is the GOAT!!! I will definitely be a repeat/regular customer. My first time working with him he mastered 2 songs of mine and really brought both of them to life! Super professional/informative - gives plenty of options, and also explains his whole process. I learned a TON from him and it actually had me re-evaluate my mixing process/pre-master. If you're on the fence about mastering engineers, don't be! Wes will take care of you!!

LEGENDARY MASTERING ENGINEER. Wes (VLM) does not cut corners. The songs are always brought to another level, and if there is something that needs to be changed, he is very understanding. Best mastering engineer I have ever worked with. I will use him every time!

Wes is a highly dedicated to business, open-minded professional with huge experience and golden ears. Work was delivered in the shortest timeline (from the actual start of the work) in thehighest quality.
Please be prepared that he will provide a flexible approach with a few result options, so if you r "just send me one wav file" type of guy - it's recommended to provide as detailed requirements as possible. Wes's approach requires you to understand what you do as well and hear the difference.

This is my second time working with Wes and once again, I am extremely happy with my mastered song! He delivered multiple versions for streaming and even took into consideration my preferences during the last time I worked with him. His communication is on point and he delivers top quality work right on time. If you're looking for exceptional Masters and a really great experience, I highly recommend working with Wes!

Interview with VLM

  1. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  2. A: Started off as a DJ in the early 90's, performing for promoters like Pasquale Rotella / EDC and Gary Richards / HARD Festivals, among many others. Also headlined festivals overseas with acts like Air Liquide and Jamie Lidell. I was also a buyer for three very popular record shops in Los Angeles during that time and in total, my collection reached well over 15,000 titles. This covered many different genres as well, which has been key to what I do (decades of living, breathing, and listening to music). During this this time I also started producing, with my first original release coming out of Berlin in '99. This then led to remixing as well (The Mars Volta, Salvador Santana, Almunia, Kelpe, The Stepkids, Hanni El Khatib, Free Blood, West Indian Girl). While all of this was going on, I guess there was a buzz happening too, because I was then asked to master music for (I would say legendary) tastemaker label Stones Throw Records / Los Angeles. This was back in 2011, and mastering has been a full-time job since.

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: To deliver professional-quality masters each and every time.

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: Making my clients happy by providing them with a professional-quality master that will bring out the best in their music.

  7. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  8. A: An amazing full-length album from beatmaker / multi-intrumentalist / vocalist Evan Geesman.

  9. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  10. A: Both. I'd be a fool to tie my hands in either domain.

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: Give yourself headroom.

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: Giving my clients what they want, which includes in-depth communication and personal attention to detail.

  15. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  16. A: Make sure you hire someone with knowledge and experience.

  17. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  18. A: Kyle & Lil Yachty's 'iSpy'on Atlantic - this was my first single for a major label that went multi-platinum (4x) and in turn led to mastering 4 other songs on Kyle's latest full-length album 'Light Of Mine'

  19. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  20. A: Mastering is a dark art. I disagree. To me, it is a labor of love.

  21. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  22. A: My experience is broad concerning genres.

  23. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  24. A: Professional Quality.

  25. Q: What's your typical work process?

  26. A: Receive premasters, review and if good to start work on, I'll then move forward with mastering. Otherwise I will contact the client with my notes and request a second round of premasters.

  27. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  28. A: Custom Analog & Digital System.

  29. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  30. A: Ayo, Pensado, Lettuce.

  31. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  32. A: Stereo & Stem Mastering.
