Interview with Carlos R Marin
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Over delivery under schedule.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Making music and working with amazingly talented people. I love my job.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both systems have obvious advantages and disadvantages. The real question is not which one is better but which one is more appropriate for your project.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What is the overall aesthetic of your vision? What do you want to transmit? What is the most important idea? How much can I intervene?
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Listen to it in your head first.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
Q: What's your strongest skill?
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: A critical and objective though process geared for the most successful outcome.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I listen very hard for the elements in a mix or in a piece. Once I understand the arrangement or form I start finding a mental image of what it should sound like, how it would sound better and what elements have more importance than others. Finally, I start choosing the tools to reach the desired outcome. Once finished I listen to the original piece, a reference piece, and the worked piece to identify missing elements or to expand creative thinking and then I can finish the project.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mostly write, arrange and orchestrate music. I help with mixing and mastering of other engineers who want a second opinion or mix and master myself.
