Interview with Joe Sheriff
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I have worked on a few projects that I am especially proud of. I toured the world as a guitarist with my old band, Waylayers. I recently produced and mixed an EP for a great RnB singer called Allana Verde, and I worked in a production capacity for my techno project Em Six which got into the Beatport Hype Chart.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am working on a remix for a client, as well as mixing down an album for my personal project.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Harry Lee is a fantastic singer, Sam Wills is a fantastic mix and mastering engineer.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital, because it is all that I have known and it has democratised music making.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise that I will do my best on every job that I do, I treat every track like it is my own release.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Making people excited about their music again.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: They usually give me a choice of songs to work with, and I choose the one that I think I could do the best job on.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That remixes are secondary in importance to the original track. In many cases the remixes are the tracks that resonate more with people, and are so important to showing your song off to a different audience.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What are your influences?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Shop around, try and work with remixers who have an idea for the track that interests you.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My Macbook Pro, a solar panel (to charge)! Logic Pro X, Midi Keyboard, Headphones...
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been working in music for around 11 years, I started playing guitar in a band, toured Europe and the US, and now I am a freelance producer and songwriter.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My remix style is takes great influence from electronic music, it has a nice bounce to it, but always works around the song.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Calvin Harris, he knows how to write Number 1 hits!
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Try and learn a new skill as much as possible, and always challenge yourself.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on electronic based music when I am not doing remixes, usually house or techno. But my remixes tend to lean more towards the pop world, as I am working with vocal tracks.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I think I have a good ear for a hook!
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I am an avid music fan, with lots of influences, so I bring a unique sound to all of my productions. I have a good ear for how a song flows and develops, as I also work as a songwriter, and have had my songs placed on various adverts and Spotify Playlists.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I listen to the original track for any instrumental hooks or vocal hooks that I can make use of. I work out the BPM of the track and think of the various genres that may fit with the BPM of the original, and then I listen to references so that I am in the right head space when choosing sounds. I then lay down a melody on the keyboard, and build the track from the ground up. A lot of the track really starts coming together in the final 80% of the job.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a relatively simple studio setup. Yamaha HS5, Avantone Mixcube, Rokit KRK Monitors for checking bottom end, as well as AKG 712 headphones for reference.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: My favourite musicians are the ones who are firmly in their own lane, and ahead of the curve in terms of sound design.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I most commonly do remixes for my clients. They come to me with a finished track, or a demo, and I remix it in a style that they have envisaged, or I suggest a style that I think will work well.
My typical turn around time is one week. I'll revise until the artist is happy, which is typically two revisions.
